I watched the 9/11 Tribute on CBS last night and I was amazed and proud to see that Nextel included dispatchers during their breaks and tributes to public safety workers!!!! (Actually they did twice!) I saw a lady with a headset on and saw "911 operator" at the bottom of the screen and I had to blink and do a double take to confirm what I was seeing. Way to go Nextel!! And thank you!:)

Telecommunicators in our agency funded, designed and sent out a plaque to let the New York 9-1-1 Operators know their efforts were recognized. We received a thank you with some details of how things were in those first days, and they definitely deserve as much recognition as firefighters, officers, K-9s, citizen volunteers, etc. I'm glad to hear that Nextel recognized them!

My agency does include Communications personnel in CISD sessions, but it seems we (the Supervisors) have to remind Patrol every time it's needed that WE WERE FIRST ON THE SCENE! They don't always remember us, but we do put our metaphorical foot in the door and demand attention.:bounce:

We have been added to the CISD sessions in our General Orders manual, but considering that it would take something like the WTC or an officer being killed for anyone to even get a counselor called in. It is definitely under-used at our agency. We had 2 incidents in the past year in which officers were hit by cars, and the sh*t hit the fan...and we've still never had CISD on any incident.

I was involved in a officer shooting and it was, at the time, our dispatch supervisor that activated the CISD team that night. I don't think the PD ever called them. I think it's in our policy that the dispatch supervisor can make the decision him/her self when a CISD team is needed. Don't wait for others to make the call, just do it yourself.
