View Full Version : NYPD rookie salary
For all you NYPD guys and gals out there. Realistically speaking, what can a first year rookie PO make with a normal amount of OT? Thanks.
I took the test back and I was also wondering. Also my brother in laws father is retired FDNY he has a nice house up in Rockland County do you think it is possible for a cop to buy a home outside of New York( Rockland Westchester, Long Island) without having to save for ten years just to get the down payment ?
Fred,
Im out here on Long Island. I don't think that anyone new to the job could afford a house in one of the better LI communities without help from a spouse or family member. There are areas on LI where you probably could get a house, but no where I would want to live. You can probably get a decent starter apt on the island for around $800 per/month......1 bedroom, bath, kitchen.

I will say a new rookie makes about 39-42k a year with some normal OT. With the new contract pending...... a rookie can probably make around 42-45k the first year.
Thanks tommy. Im thinking about going PD instead of DOI. I should be starting full time this summer as an investigator at DOI. The only bad thing about DOI is the pay. They start at $35,000 with no OT offered. However, at DOI I would get some great investigative experience as well as LE experience. The only thing is the pay. My ultimate goal is to be an 1811. I don't know if I should suck up the pay and get the investigative experience at DOI and then apply FED, or if I should go PD and live alittle more comfortably. Any thoughts anyone???

SSWEEN, I would stay with DOI and get the criminal investigative experience.
You are performing corruption investigations, right??
What better experience for an 1811 position I would think.
CT,
Yes, most of our investigations are corruption within the city gov't. Im thinking the same thing. Im probably going to stay aboard with DOI, get my Peace Officer certification so I can make arrests etc, and then in 2 years get out. I guess I can tough it out for that long. Thanks!
