just a question to anybody in a local or state PD: how do your detectives handle their cases; better yet, what cases do they handle. I specifically mean cases like burglaries, vandalism, etc. (the less-than-sexy cases). I know, for example, in the NYPD the beat cop is expected to gather some preliminary info, prepare a report, and the detectives take it and run with it. Other agencies seem to think that the patrol cop, on top of all the other stuff you need to do, should handle a lot of the leg work for these cases: ie. follow up with victim, contacting possible witnesses, conducting special patrols during crime hours.
That is fine, and I don't have a problem with that, BUT it seems sometimes that demand is added onto your other duties of writing tickets (God forbid your numbers are low HAHAHAHAHA), answering jobs, patrolling, etc.
So, I am curious. What is the consensus is of everybody out there. Do your detectives carry there own weight or do they always seem to be looking to pass it off on patrol? I know somebody is going to say the detectives are busy, and I am sure they are, but so is patrol. Just curious, stay safe.
PS: Answer the poll
