I was asked by my daughter's teacher to give a class to the students on 911 calling, Stranger Awareness, Safety...well of course being the nice police officer I am, of course I immediately said yes! I think this would be great, and I am all about this type of community service, except.....I have a few ideas, but, alas my knowledge is sadly lacking!
So if anyone else out there has any experience in this area, and could give some pointers, direct me to a web site, or provide any info., I would be extremely greatful!
Any and all suggestions will be greatfully accepted and considered! Thank You!

Sig 20,

I believe the best person to ask about 911/dispatching on this board would be MrJim911. He is currently a dispatcher for a police dept. Give him a holler. I've seen him help others & I'm pretty sure he will help you out. Good Luck!

http://www.mcgruff.com has a lot of info for kids. They will even send McGruff with you, if you want.

Probably one of the best resources for kid's safety materials is the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (www.missingkids.org, or 1-800-843-5678). Great resource for law enforcement...a variety of publications, quizzes, posters ("Knowing My 8 Rules for Safety"), etc. for kids of various ages, and they will provide pretty much all of it free (to law enforcement officers). They also have a lot of resources on teaching kids about Internet safety...and I HIGHLY recommend that you include this in your class if these kids are old enough to use a computer (which seems to include any child above age 3 nowadays). www.safekids.com is a good site for online safety information.

Both NCMEC and Safekids.com have various quizzes on their websites...some good questions that I know I would incorporate into this type of class if I was the one who was stuck--um, I mean, lucky enough to be--teaching it.

Ask your dispatchers if they have a mock 911 phone set up. It should be a portable thing where the kids can dial 911 and the dispatcher will answer. They learn what questions will be asked and what the procedures are if there is an emergency. Even if they don't have one see if there is a phone in the classroom nd have them dial 911 from there... But for goodness sake make sure dispatch knows your calling!!
We do tours of the 911 center but since it's mostly technology younger kids won't get it. If your students are older give them a tour. Also of course they will want to climb around in a squad car and a fire truck if you can get one to sit at the school for you. Again, depending on age, hand out some coloring books, stickers, etc... Take their fingerprints while your at it. Good Luck!!

Just a quick thank you! All the answers I got when right in line with what I wanted, and a few I wouldn't have thought of even! I think the class will be great, and I think I will enjoy this! Thanks again to everyone that helped me with this!

Sincerely,
