View Full Version : NYPD academy
Two short questions,
1. How long does it normally take for the psychologist to determine if you are suitable for the position. I took my psych on Friday and she said to contact my investigator and get a rush on things.
2. I noticed the physical agility requirements for the end of the academy and was wondering what happens it you can't do the minimum amount, what do they do with you? Do they fire you on the spot? thanks for the help.

1) they usually dont tell u the results if u passed it....i wouldn worry much though if they said they're gonna rush it
2) they'll either let u retake it immediately....hold u at the academy for a few weeks and let u try again....or hold u over till the next class....i dont see many get fired........
what is the academy like? Is it run, run, run and classroom or what? Do you have to pass all parts of the physical stardards or is it an average of all four tests combined? I'm not sure about the reaching part?
I can't tell you what the academy is like but I can tell you what I saw on the news last night. Supposably 12 NYPD cops, training for pain clothes detail, had to be hospitalized the other day for elevated enzymes in there body. No one knows for sure what caused it but it raisd alot of concern over their training which was said to be highly intense. Just thought I'd throw that in.

They came down with the same condition a person who has been beaten up gets. It has a fancy name (don't ask me to repeat it) but basically your urine gets very dark or has blood and the muscles are extremely sore. This can also happen when someone is worked out extremely hard and they are not in good shape.
It probably was a little of both....

the 12 cops who were having the medical problems as reported by the media were doing specialized intensive training for the street crimes unit not the regular rookie academy training

3 classes....about 1hr 45min each...and a gym of the same time period....and the run is usually a warm up....
i didn't hear about this one, been away from the tube. anyway, the academy isn't bad, the run is maybe 2 miles (just boring running like a rat around in circles). I don't remember the how they graded the PT, i think it was you had get the minimum in each cat. my advice is don't drop out on the run and try hard on the PT, you'll be fine.
as to the 12 cops, i think PC training has some "redman" defensive tactics training (never took it). if i were to guess, i would be willing to bet the 12 weren't in the best physical shape. who knows, the heating system in the PA is a mess anyway, could have helped dehydrate the 12. anyway, i can't believe the session was that hard. i say that because the job is so paranoid about injuries and lawsuits, they don't get that intense (maybe except for ESU).
There are a couple guys(laterals) at my station that came from NYPD. I recall one of them saying that the pt at the NYPD academy was not that bad at all. Nothing too intense.

" they don't get that intense (maybe except for ESU)"
I don't know. Anybody read this months American Police Beat? Inside there was a 1/2 page color photo of ESU guys in gear with MP-5s. Of the three officers, two of them were so overweight it was embarrassing! As much as I try to defend NYPD and ESU to people I meet, when photos of these sooo overweight (I mean Chris Farley with a gun and a helmet) are posted, I understand why we get laughed off when I say "yeah, we have a SWAT team too..."
Stay safe (and in shape...please)

being in shape isn't managing your weight either, you could be slim and strong as an ox but if you don't work your cardio your heart will implode when you stress it. plus stay hydrated, dehydration can wreak havoc. gott drink water, no coffee or soda, just dehyrates you even more.
