finally, 18 month probationary review board(plus question)

Finally had my probationary review board. Lasted all day. Almost everyting went great. The only bad thing was that months back, I left my issued flashlight in the patrol car. Next day, gone. I bought the same flashlight minus the dept logo and serial #. Also, processed a lock-up months back and forgot to get my cuffs back. Thereafter, I just used a different pair. Sounds stupid but it seems as though quite a few people have done this. Anyway, they were a bit upset with me bacause I borrowed a friends flashlight w/ the dept logo and his serial #. One sgt. kept talking as if I was trying to be deceptive in using another officers flashlight. I have to do paperwork on the lost property(flashlight/cuffs) and return to the sgt. to show him that I have dept. issued flashlight/cuffs.

I was wondering if other officers out there with there dept would have to do paperwork in the event he/she lost dept. issued equipment such as cuffs or a flashlight.

Our policy is pretty laxed. They give you a whole bunch of stuff when you get there. But at the same time you can go buy whatever you want. I think I lost the handcuffs that they gace me actually. Havnt seen them in about a year. I am sure they are in the trunk of the car or something, but I bought my own cuffs to use. I prefer the hinged handcuffs. Not the chain link that they issue out. So now when I leave if I cant find them I have to buy a pair of pearless chian linked cuffs. No big deal.

Although there actions may be picky, all they want is the paper work done. I mean hey, you were spending money to replace the stuff right, why not just do the paper work from the get go. They really can't fault you on loosing the equipment, if within reason, but they will gig you on not following proper procedure on filing the paper work. Actually, it's just practice for when you loose your service weapon!!

There reason for the paperwork in D.C. is because some of our equipment has been found in very strange place(homicide scene)and on victims. That why....so if you lose something report. It not going to kill ya. liening will. Congrat on passing to the next level....now you can police. be safe joe and I'll see around..
