Sorry to hear about your colleague, Skippy. It sounds like it was a brutal death. My thoughts and prayers go out to the officer and his family. I will think of him when I attend the candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial (http://www.nleomf.org) next month.
TOM
PS: Does Australia have a similar memorial?

Shot officer dies, suspects face court
Sydney policeman Glen McEnallay died with family by his bedside, while detectives charged a fourth man over the shooting.
The 26-year-old constable was shot at Hillsdale, in Sydney's east, last Wednesday during a routine check of a suspected stolen car containing several young men.
Three men appeared in court over the shooting the next day and are due to reappear in a Sydney court today.
Another man, charged on Wednesday night, will also appear in the same court.
Officers from the State Protection Group (formerly the Tactical Response Group) swooped on a 22-year-old man from Kingsgrove, in Sydney's southwest, at a city railway station.
He was accompanied by a woman, who was also taken to Surry Hills police station for questioning.
Homicide detectives questioned the man for several hours at Kings Cross police station before charging him, a police spokeswoman said.
Police from Strike Force Valles charged the 22-year-old man with murder, shooting with intent to murder, possessing an unlicensed firearm, stealing from a dwelling and possessing a prohibited drug, namely heroin.
He was refused bail and will appear in Central Local Court.
Senior Deputy Commissioner Ken Moroney paid tribute to the officer outside the Prince of Wales Hospital shortly after his death at 12.30pm (AEST) on Wednesday, a week after he was shot.
Mr Moroney said police and the community were clearly shocked by the "vicious and most vile" attack and he appealed for people to take stock of the level of violence in the community.
"As we prepare to bury our colleague next week, it's also an occasion to honour him, honour his life as a young man who I believe was true to his oath of office," he told journalists.
Snr Const McEnallay remained critically ill after neuro-surgery to remove a bullet lodged near his brain and workmates had maintained a week-long bedside vigil alongside family members.
It was reported that he was to become engaged to his girlfriend Amanda during the Easter holiday.
Police Minister Michael Costa said the death was a tragic reminder of the dangers police faced every day on the job.
"Every police officer will feel the impact of his death," Mr Costa said.
"It is also a day we should remember Glenn McEnallay as a hero, as somebody that laid his life on the line to defend our community."
Police would not say if his life support system was turned off, but family members were with the officer when he died.
Tentative arrangements have been made for a police funeral at Taree on NSW's mid-north coast next Tuesday.
Three men faced court over the shooting last Thursday, all charged with intent to murder Constable McEnallay.
Montekiai Taufahema, 25, John Taufahema, 24, and Sione Penisini, 23, remain in custody.
They are also due to appear in Central Local Court today.
Before the arrest, police had been hunting a fourth man who fled the scene.
