I received a letter from Customs Med the other day, they want me to get a 'complete functional capacity evaluation' of my back. After calling around to several physical therapist, the cost out of my pocket will be $500-$600. I'm not eating Top-Ramen, but $600 is a bundle-o-cash.
My question is to those of you who are already working as an LEO in some form. Knowing what you know about the job now, would you drop the cash to have this evaluation done?
This is for a Inspector position. This is a second career for me, I have been in the tech field for many years, so I don't have any (real) LEO experience other than the military. And yes, I really want this job.
I don't have any real LE experience either but...it sounds to me like you already answered the question for yourself... "I really want this job. " I know what I would do if I were in your shoes.
Good luck!!

Bubblehead,
I too had to take a Functional Capacity Exam to measure the strength and flexibility of my lower back and legs. This was required by the INS for a DEO position. The test wasn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but I passed it. I don't know where you are located, but if your in the Long Island / New York City area I can give you the info on the doctor that I went to. By the way, he charged me $200.00 and Ihad his letter for INS the next day.

Take this for what it is worth. It may not be applicable to your situation. Then again, it may be: I cut my arm pretty badly when I was 10. I'm 31 now. Had to go to the hospital for some minor plastic surgery. Was in it for one night for observation. I told this to the medical people when I did it for S/A. I got a letter a couple of weeks later wanting me to go have my arm looked at by a "Board Certified Orthopaedic surgeon" for "my history of right forearm surgery".
No way, Jose. Especially when I'm footing the bill for something that happened 20 years ago and has never given me a lick of trouble.
I wrote them an e-mail and called, even though I was sure some faceless bureaucrat would make me do it as their FAQ specifically talked about 20 year old injuries. Much to my delight and surprise they gave me a pass. Told me to submit an e-mail saying exactly what happened and that would be sufficient enough explanation.
Doesn't hurt to ask.
On the other hand, if they had really, really, really, REALLY wanted me to pay for it myself even though I don't have 2 bits to rub together, I would have done it.
Why? 'Cause I really, really, really, REALLY want the job.
Good luck.

Mister J.
I sent the email and the response was that they really, really, really want me to pay for it. But, more importantly, how did you change the thread title?

Huh? Looks like the same title to which I replied. I am a master of many skills but magic is not one of them.
