Most agencies have Background Investigators. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) also has General Investigators (GS-1810) that conduct BIs in addition to or instead of the individual agency. I know for the USPP, we had both. For the USMS, the agency does it. From my friend's FAM application, they use OPM also.

Are these 1811 that do backgrounds for there agencies or 1810. The problem I have is I like the idea of doing background investigations and I was offered a job with USIS but I want to work for the Goverment.

PittAJ,

I'm a Background Investigator for a NYC agency, and am also familiar with USIS(was offered a job too).

If you like the idea of doing bi's, then go with USIS for now.

A lot of the fed agencies use their own agents to do bi's on potential 1811's, or they farm it out to ex-agents.

Not knowing your past experience, USIS would be equivalent to the type of work you would do at a gov. agency, so I would seriously consider it.

The main thing is to find out what the typical caseload is for a USIS Investigator. If it's high, it means that you're pushing a lot of paper and doing very little investigating. If low, you have more time to do thorough investigations.

If you're really interested in doing backgrounds, then one of the best jobs in the G is the Security Officer position for the CIA. They do all of the investigations for CIA security clearances. They also do the polygraph program. It's a great position if you're looking to move into something else in the CIA and would also be great on the resume for an 1811 position. I think it blows away any of the other G background-only positions. I actually had an opportunity to interview for this earlier in the year, but decided it wasn't something that I wanted enough to relocate for. Anyway, here's the link if you're interested:

P.S.

I was told by a recruiter that they can't get enough people to fill these positions!
