It isn't too often that the FBI posts a vacancy announcement for the Police Officer position, so I thought I'd pass it along. Their officers are stationed at the Bureau's Headquarters building in Washington DC; the Washington DC Field Office; the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia; two buildings occupied by the New York City Field Office; and at the Bureau's Criminal Justice Information Services Division complex in Clarksburg, West Virginia. This particular announcement is for the DC area. The application deadline is April 22, 2002. What exactly are their functions Mr Ackerman? Are they similar to a security officer? I assume it isn't like a regular police force. What type of advancement opportunities are there? Is it a stepping stone to an 1811 spot with the FBI

Although they do respond to calls for service, their work revolves primarily around security as opposed to law enforcement. They attend basic police training at FLETC. Some FBI police officers have the opportunity to participate in special operations, such as providing security at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and at major crime scenes, and they're eligible to participate in the Bureau's K-9 program. They can also assist the DC Police. The FBI has hired many professional support personnel into SA positions in the past, although I am unaware of any FBI police officers who've made the transition.

Tom,
Is this the same as a GSA guard??
Having spent about a year of my USPP career downtown DC, I have seen the FBI "Police" in action. In that time, I never saw them conduct a traffic stop, back up any other agency, arrest anyone, or do much more than drive around or stand at their fixed posts. Not to say they don't do this but I never saw it. Fords Theatre is literally a block away from the J. Edgar building and we had incidents around there including foot chases. We also conducted traffic stops up and down PA Ave. I don't recall any officers mentioning being assisted by FBI police. Half the time they wouldn't even wave back. Almost every federal agency in DC has their own "police" force. I don't even think I can list them all. Their primary duties are security but are given the title of Police because of arrest powers. Now all of these police forces are given statutory authority in DC in an effort to assist the Metropolitan Police Department. This is my opinion and my opinion only. If you want a federal uniformed police job in Washington, DC and want to do police not security work, then go with the big three: U.S. Park Police, U.S. Capitol Police (Patrol Division), and Uniformed Division Secret Service (specifically Foreign Missions Branch).

I've never met an FBI Police Officer who became an Agent. I think your best bet would be to do "real" police work for a full-service agency if you are looking for a law enforcement stepping stone for 1811 positions down the road.

An FBI officer from my FLETC class became an agent. he had a masters in Forensics and was going through the agent process the same time he became an FBI cop.

Well, there you have it. Wrong. Again. Man, this is becoming all too common for me.

No sweat, Nomadic. You only lost track of ONE out of nearly 100,000 federal officers in the United States. I'd say you're doing just fine.

In all honesty, I dont know why this person became an FBI P/O. He was an all around great guy and had his stuff together. He had never been in LE before and I guess he accepted the first job that came along. I heard from the other FBI P/O I know, that the other officer got offered the S/A slot about 6 months after getting hired as an FBI P/O. Maybe he made a good impression on the higher ups while working in DC.
