Off-Duty Police Officer Shot, Killed


NEW ORLEANS, 8:34 a.m. CDT April 12, 2002 - An off-duty New Orleans police officer was shot and killed Friday morning in the 1600 block of Governor Nicholls Street, New Orleans police said.




Police identified the victim as Wes Williams, 30. He had been on the force for about 16 months, officials said.


According to investigators, Williams stopped his car for unknown reasons near the corner of Governor Nicholls Street and North Claiborne Avenue around 3 a.m. He was then confronted by at least one individual, who then fired several shots at Williams, investigators said.


Williams was struck several times, and was left on the sidewalk. Williams was armed, and his weapon was found in its holster when emergency officials arrived.


Williams was taken to Charity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
