This is the story as reported by SF Media:

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- One San Francisco police officer is dead and three others are in the hospital after their patrol cars collided into each other at high speeds in the Mission District late Wednesday evening while pusuing 29-year-old beating, stabbing and eye gouging suspect Monte Haney.

According to San Francisco General Hospital nursing supervisor Gloria Rodriguez, shortly before midnight Officer Jon C. Cook was pronounced dead of apparent trauma wounds to the head. A second officer, Officer Nicholas Ferrando, is in "very critical condition" with trauma wounds to the head and chest, while two others are in serious condition with multiple injuries incurred during the collision.

Two others involved, second driver David Lee and Cook's passenger, Michael Celis, sustained injuries that Lau characterized as "comparatively minor."

A few police officers, including Deputy Chief Mindy Pengel, came and went from San Francisco General Hospital this morning, most declining to speak with a handful of reporters waiting in the parking lot outside the emergency entrance.

"We're all in a state of shock," says San Francisco Police Chief Fred Lau. "We lost a family member."

The San Francisco police said that two patrol cars were responding to a sighting of Mr. Haney at a high rate of speed when they rammed into each other at 17th and Dolores streets just after 10:30 Wednesday night.

Police say Monte Haney is being held for mayhem and assault. He's accused of not only beating and stabbing his girlfriend, but then removing one of her eyes while she laid still pretending to be dead.

Investigators say 29-year-old Monte Haney has a long rap sheet stretching back to 1991. The San Franciscan has been convicted on robbery and burglary charges the past decade, but his latest crime almost defies description

This is definitely a big blow to the SFPD Family & to all the LE world. God bless to all the uniformed officers out there.
