View Full Version : Drug Usage? [Marijuana Only]

My question is specific to prior drug usage.

I have used marijuana in my past, a little more than 2 years ago. I would like to apply for a number of federal agencies but am hesistant b/c of my past usage. The only agency that seems to preclude me from applying is the FBI where a 3 year drug free period is mandated. The other agencies (Secret Service, CIA, NSA, DEA, Border Patrol, etc.) all have wording to the effect of "no recent drug usage" which realistically can mean anything to anyone. It's entirely subjective. Should I realistically even apply to federal agencies? Are two years long enough to not preclude me? I've experimented with only marijuana and I did so very few times; it was wrong and illegal and I accept the ramifications of my actions. I just realistically, (realistically being key here) would like to know my options and or chances of being employed by an agency like the DEA or Secret Service.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you used marijuana only a few times, and it has been more than two years since, chances are that most agencies will not get too excited about it. I'd start applying if I were you.

Only thing I noticed in your post is that "only a few times". Most agencies are not going to get excited about some reasonable youthful experimentation unless the frequency and amount of the use should have led you to publish the results of your experiment in a scientific journal.

In contact with recruiters, ask what the drug policy is. Most are pretty plain and you can measure yourself against them. ATF's on marijuana is not more than 10X ever, not in previous three years, never, ever after age 24.

You should be fine, other than the FBI.

My EOD class at one of the above named agencies had 40% of the class with prior usage like you describe - no big deal. I had friend who made a smoke/nosmoke decision during his first initial interview, he decided to stop right there, and he did get the job.

What does that mean, the people interviewing him offered him a joint?

They told him right there, in the interview, if he wanted a job his dope smoking days were over. If he could not agree, there was no need to go any further in the interview.
