I have helped 100's of firefighers get hired over the past few years and most of the trouble they had was the orals. If you follow my instructions below it should help you greatly. 98.4% of the people fail! So BE YOURSELF!
Write each question below on one side of a 3x5 index card and your answer on the other side.
Buy a small personal voice recorder and read your answer into it. Do one question at a time; keep rewinding it and listen to your answer. If it sounds bad to you, it sounds bad to the Chiefs at the oral board. Your answers will start to flow nice and smooth about the 20th time you read it.
Keep doing this until you have every question and answer MEMORIZED. Some of the questions may be asked different but in all they will be very similar and you will be prepared to answer any question they give you.
This will take some time but I guarantee this will get you top scores in the oral board. If you don't do this you will most likely join the 98.4% club.
Tell us about yourself.
What can you tell us about ___________ Fire Department?
If you were asked to choose a hero, who would it be and why?
Why do you want to be a firefighter?
What makes you the best candidate for this position?
What does equal opportunity mean to you?
Describe teamwork.
What do you think you will dislike about this career?
What will you bring to this department?
What does diversity mean to you?
What three words describe your personality?
You are at a off duty party and see your officer taking pills. What do you say? or do?
How would you describe sexual harassment?
What does affirmative action mean to you?
What do you think the mission statement should be for our department?
What have you done to prepare for this position?
You are part of a crew on the engine company that responded to a fire. Once on the scene you saw that the building looked abandoned and the roof looked
like it was ready to fall in. Your lieutenant orders you to pull a line to the front door and
get ready to go in. What do you do?
Do you have anything to add?
