MASSILLON, Ohio -- A family is mourning the loss of a husband and father after he was killed during a shoot-out with a suspect Friday.

Patrolman Eric Taylor, 31, was assisting officers from other agencies as they tried to end a 12-mile chase with Donald Matthews, 61, of Canton. Matthews allegedly shot Taylor in the back. Matthews was also killed in the shootout.

Taylor, who is survived by a wife and two children, is being remembered in his home town. Massillon Mayor Frank Cicchinelli said, "We are a closely knit community. A strong community, and this is a test. We'll get through it, not completely through it, but we'll get through it."

Taylor had been a Massillon police officer for four years.

Federal agents and police searched for weapons and explosives in Matthews' apartment Saturday night. Authorities said they were looking for anything that might be related to the officer's death.
