a friend of mine who works with the police dept in the next town over just gave me a patch the other day cause i asked him about it. my question is how do you get patches to start collecting and trading? just wondering what yall might suggest.

One of the easiest ways is to just ask departments if they give out there patch. You'll get answers that range from "Hell no", to "Absolutely,...here's 10." Some dept's are more than willing to give you a patch if you ask. An easy way to find out if they do is by checking dept. websites.

There are many patch trading/selling shows across the country where you can trade patches, or buy them.

Or you could use my favorite way, Ebay. I've spent quite a bit of money on there buying patches. Last time I checked there were over 6000 for sale on the site.
