VIRGINIA, Minn. -- A pair of St. Louis County sheriff's deputies were responding to trouble at a youth group home when their squad car collided with a van, killing one deputy and critically injuring the other, authorities said Tuesday.
Deputy Bradley A. Anderson, 50, of Aurora, died at the scene of the Monday morning accident. He was a passenger in the squad car driven by Deputy Kevin M. Friebe, 30, of Virginia.
Friebe remained in the intensive care unit Tuesday at a Virginia hospital.
The driver of the van, --------- -------, 46, of Hoyt Lakes, remained in serious condition at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.
According to the Sheriff's Department:
Anderson and Friebe were heading toward a residential group home for emotionally troubled youth in Biwabik Township. A worker, who said he was the only one on duty, said a resident was out of control and had assaulted him.
The deputies were westbound on County Road 100 when it collided with a van traveling eastbound about 10:30 a.m., six miles south of Aurora in White Township. It was drizzling at the time and the roads were wet. Seat belts also were being used, according to the State Patrol, which is investigating the accident.
Anderson, an Ely native, had been with the department for 11 years. Friebe was a 31/2-year department veteran.
