How long does the hiring process take? I know it depends on the city. I'm just looking for something so I can get an idea. I am currently serving in the United States Marine Corps and will be leaving the service in a little more than a year.

Like you said, it always varies with the city, the need to get someone hired, etc. All the processes I have done with any agency (police or fire) took a minimum of 3 months, and as long as 7 months. Don't expect it to happen the week after you apply, it won't. The background investigation itself usually takes a month. Then you have the written, physical, psychological, polygraph, and other tests you may or may not have to take depending on locality. So keep that in mind. Hope this helps a little.
