View Full Version : Left handed long guns
Do most agencies assign left handed versions of long guns to recruits that shoot left handed? I can shoot a right handed shotgun or rifle without trouble, but I was wondering if it is best to train with left or right handed versions. I work more smoothly with a gun designed for the left side. For pistol, I generally shoot right handed, and am left eye dominant.
Thanks,
Shadow
It has been my experience that agencies do not utilize left handed tools for a mainly right landed world. Actually, I have never seen or heard of ISSUED weapons being left-handed.
I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule, but if you can shoot with a right handed weapon, what's the need? BTW, I am left handed as well and this has never been an issue.
Thanks for the info, I had been debating on buying a left handed shotgun for personal use. I'll most likely just get a right handed model so that I won't have to retrain myself if I end up in an academy somewhere.

I also am right handed and left eye dominant. I left shoulder a variety of pump and auto shotguns and semi-auto rifles without difficulty. My deer rifle is a right hand bolt action. given my choice I'd get a left hander in a bolt gun but I wouldn't stress about standard service weapons. I don't even need a brass deflector to use an AR-15 lefty but the cross bolt safety on a remington 870 can give me fits, I prefer the tang safety on the mossbergs.
Good luck, k-9
