I'm in a group of 23 guys taking the extended academy--putting ourselves through part-time on Sundays + Mon, Tues, Wed nights. Since we are not affiliated with any department yet, we provide our own weapons and, in California, since we are not affiliated with a department, our magazines are limited to 10 rounds.
Problem--stage one of our first shooting qualification is 12 rounds from holster in 12 seconds. The training officer said that it was intended for no reload. The problem is, with 10 round mags, that demands a reload. (When we get to mandatory reload sections of the shoot, we are given 15 seconds.)
Should we be able to do that all in 12 seconds in another week and a half?
Anyone want to lend me a hi cap mag for a Glock 19 for a few days??????
I guess that goes against the letter of the law in California. If we were affiliated with a department, we would have been issues hi-cap mags.

With enough dry practice(empty gun) at home, you should be able to do an emergency reload in about a second. That's with the slide locked back, index a fresh magazine, eject depleted magazine, insert fresh mag (fresh should be passing the empty as it's falling on the way in), and use your thumb to release the slide lock. It may take just a tad more time if your mag pouch has a flap. What distance are you shooting at? If it's 10 yards or less, you should be able to do it.
Since you'll have 10+1 rounds in the gun to start with, you only need one shot after inserting the fresh mag.
It's strange they don't make provisions for 10 round mags during the test. What are the other students doing?
Good luck,

it may be illegal but this will work, you could get the plus 1 ext and the keep one in the chamber. this would give you the 12, you might want to talk with someone there to see if they would approve this. dunno, thought just popped into my head.

I think that is crap that they will not allow you the hi cap mags. Have you harped on this with the range people?
another random thought. you might look around gun shops or gun shows in your area for pre-ban hi caps, they arent cheap but they will do the trick. hope some of this helps.

When I went through the ca post our training officer was chp he let whoever didn't have the correct mags to either borrow from another student or use his weapon if you bought your own ammo. which i found very interesting since that doesn't happen much. if you have a glock 19 you should be able to find someone who is sponsered that should let you borrow thier mags. my class was pretty tight and those of us that were sponsered helped out best we could. This is something you need to work out as soon as possible with another classmate and the instructor but do it quickly

It is truly amazing what dry shooting can do. I spent a weekend dry shooting by putting a empty casing on top of my glock and dry firing. By Monday, I was shooting better than most of my class and I was very inexperienced before then.
