View Full Version : Disqualified for Growing Marijuana?

I am filling out the Drug Use Statement for the DEA Special Agent application. I am supposed to describe the extent of my past drug use. There is a section that reads:

“By the words “use”, “attempted use” and “experimentation”, I understand that [the] DEA is asking me to disclose any and all EXPERIENCES with illegal narcotics or dangerous drugs, to include any act or attempted act of trying, smoking, ingesting, tasting, inhaling, injecting, puffing or OTHERWISE EXPERIMENTING with a controlled substance or a substance that I believe to be a controlled substance."

Furthermore:

“Have you ever …. PROVIDED, sold, SUPPLIED, MANUFACTURED, PRODUCED, transported, or otherwise trafficked any illegal narcotic or dangerous drug, to include marijuana?”

Like twenty years ago I did do the following:

(1) My friend gave me some seeds and told me they were marijuana. I did not think the seeds my friend gave me were real marijuana seeds. So out of curiosity I planted a few seeds at home. I basically forgot about them. A couple of seeds did sprout. When I became suspicious that they may in-fact be real marijuana seeds I destroyed the plants/sprouts. I did not attempt to smoke, ingest, taste, or puff any of this substance in any way shape or form. Nor did I give any of this substance away or attempt to sell any of this substance.

(2) I used to help a friend care for his marijuana plants. We were wanting to smoke them when they bud. His father destroyed the plants and we were never able to use them. Nothing was sold or given away. Every thing was destroyed.

I am thinking that in both cases the marijuana was never manufactured, well, “completely” to it’s usable form. Any thoughts about this disqualifying me would be appreciated.

Im no expert by far, nor am I am member of the DEA, but I feel I can say with certainty that this is a definite DQ issue. I saw that you are going through the process for several other 1811 positions, did this ever come up and if so what did they say about it? No offense to you but I thought this post was a joke at first. I think you are going to have some problems with those actions.......especially since you are applying to the DEA. I would say be honest, admit your mistakes, and hope for the best. Thats all you could really do.

Man...I thought this was a joke too. I'm not a LEO, but common sense tells me that this is probably an automatic DQ. If I'm not mistaken, I think cultivating marijuana is a felony. I don't even think your age at the time will make a difference. Even though your marijuana plants weren't "smokable," in my opinion I think you still manufactured it. You and your friend planted the seeds and something grew because you guys were able to care for it like a house plant until dad destroyed it.

No offense, but you picked the worse department to apply at with this sort of situation. However, I don't know of any department that will give you a "pass" on this one.

This IS a joke, right?

Based on what I think was the reason that I was rejected by DEA, USSS, and a couple of muni agencies, take my advice: Start looking elsewhere for employment, you'll be wasting your time.

That makes four of us! I read the title and thought - "Uh, yes!" but figured maybe there was a new and exciting twist to the "I smoked can I get in?" questions -- but obviously I was wrong. :)

I do not know if it will be a problem, but I suspect it would be, being the DEA and all. In any rate, the worst that can happen is that you are denied and wasted you time over it.

Are you friggin' kidding me? This is like applying to the Forest Service and listing your National Forest marijuana cultivation skills as a potential boon to the agency's anti-drug program. Why are you interested in law enforcement at all? You have listed multiple instances of your part in a "Marijuana Plant Care Program" and you're now in the application process with the DEA??? The "D" in DEA stands for Drugs! I have to agree with the previous posters in saying that this is instant DQ material, though I've heard surprising stories from successful candidates in the past. I don't think the smokable v. non-smokable loophole is going to work for you, not to mention your manipulation of the language in the applicant questionnaire. That's just my opinion, but you never know til you try (they may not actually laugh out loud at your question...like I did). Good luck.

Isn't this the same guy who was worried that they would find out what he's been looking at on the internet?

Maybe it's time to look into a new career.

RedWhiteBlue,

Please tell everyone you were kidding before they laugh you out of here. You were kidding......................right????

We have to know, this is the most odd question I have ever seen here. If it was a joke, it was a good one, but if it wasn't.............I don't know...........just bow out quietly I guess...
