View Full Version : First time buyer...
Heya all, I have recently been intersted in handguns. I have never owned a weapon in my life. I am looking for advice as the steps to take and the process of buying one. I live in the state of Iowa. I am not ever sure of the laws concerning handguns. I plan on taking a weapons safty course before I do anything, but after that I really have no clue where I should begin.
Thanks

Weapons handling and safety classes are a good place to start. Most any of them will also cover the appropiate permits etc. that one would need. I STRONGLY suggest that you research and read the laws pertaining to your state. Don't simply ask your cop friends. Too often we can get it wrong. It is better to have the data in front of your own eyes.
On to the topic of picking a hangun:
Everybody has their own opinions when it comes to firearms. These are mine.
1) I would choose a double action revolver as a first gun. Mainly because there is less to remember and less to go wrong.
2) Most people would recommend you start with a .22 rimfire. This is a good choice. If you are on a limited budget or don't plan on purchasing many handguns I would suggest you consider instead a revolver chambered for .357magnum, or at least .38special.
This is because most people can easily handle the report and recoil of target .38spec. loads. Once you gain proficiency you may progress to the more powerful .357mag rounds. (A .357 revolver can and will safely fire .38spec. ammo. .357 CANNOT be fired safely in a .38.)
Get good Instruction. Know the laws as they pertain to you. Don't be intimidated. Have fun!
Very good Advice give from Jim. Revolvers would be the best bet for getting use to handling a firearm. Spend the money on a firearms safety course by either your PD, NRA, or gun club. Dont buy a gun just because it looks cool or its the present fad *cough* *glock* *cough*. That comes later when you are more experienced.
