I will be qualifying with my own rifle (Colt AR15, semiauto) for duty use next month and would like some opinions of the guys here on the board...

AMMO
What kind/brand of duty ammo do you carry? I plan to carry some the frangible (sp?) and standard. I am a County Deputy and work in a mixture of both rural and urban enviroments.

SIGHTS
I am looking at both red Dot and replaceing the sights on the rifle with the glow in the dark variaty.

LIGHTS
Which lights do you recommend.

Thanks for any hep you can give me. I was a 11B for 8 years but this is a different application for the rifle then I am used to.

.223 tends to fragment in any case due to its speed and weight.
I have heard glowing reports of Hornady Urban TAP. My Dept. uses whatever the rangemaster got for us, currently a mix of winchester FMJ and soft points from (I think) remington. We have not had a shooting with the FMJ (I think price was the deciding factor), the soft points have fragmented on impact with felons and objects no ricochet or over penetration but stopped the felon in their tracks.

Where is a good place to get the Hornaday TAP rounds?
I got a Bushmaster E2 shorty with part of the tax
refund.
Anyone want some wind, snow and ice so I can go
shoot the gun. GRIN
A Bushmaster catalog came with the gun and it
shows some night sights for the ar15. They look interesting,
but I want a scope first.
Although working evenings and nights they might be more useful.

My dept. will start putting on qualification classes this spring. You have to buy your weapon and ammo (dept. guidlines). I purchased a Bushmaster A3, but have not put any extras on it yet.

What about tactical slings or bipods? Do most carry their rifle in the trunk or mounted in the front?

A good scope will let you see at night with just a little backlight, i.e., street light or moonlight. Keep in mind a rifle will be used more on the line of a sniper rifle, not in a gun fight per se. When I bought my scope I went to a gun shop at dusk, took several scopes outside and tried them out in low light conditions.

If you're going to use TAP, stay away from the lighter loadings (40-60gr). The latest ballistic research shows that the 75gr TAP is one of the most effective loadings out there. The caveat being is that a 1x7 barrel twist is required to stabilize this load. If your barrel has a 1x9 twist, the Federal 69gr Gold Medal Match is one of the best performers. This takes into account both penetration and fragmentation. Black Hills Ammunition also loads some excellent 5.56 loadings. HTH.

Hornady TAP and your AR topped with a Colt C-More red dot scope. This is a awesome urban, entry type sight. It's still quick at medium ranges and I have shot plates at 100 yards with suprising quickness and accuracy.

3 of us from my department just ordered and got our Bushmaster's AR15-A3's.

The duty ammo we'll be carring are Federal Gold Match 69gr BTHP

I'm looking at going with the AimPoint CompML2 scope and some sort of suerfire setup for the light system.
