FRANKLIN: Efforts are under way to help two
firefighters who were severely burned in a weekend
blaze.

Fire officials encouraged people to go to any local
blood banks and donate blood in Lewis Pinella's name.
Additional blood drives are being organized to benefit
Pinella and Brian Hoiberg, officials said.

Both men suffered second- and third-degree burns
Sunday afternoon after being trapped on the second
floor of a two-story Frank Street home filled with
smoke and flames, authorities said.

They remained in critical but stable condition
yesterday in the burn intensive care unit at St.
Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, a hospital
spokeswoman said.

The cause of Sunday's fire appeared to be an
overloaded metal power strip that had three extension
cords plugged into it, and more extension cords
plugged into those. No charges will be filed.

Pinella, a member of Community Fire Company 3,
suffered burns to his hands, neck and back, and
Hoiberg, a North Brunswick police sergeant, suffered
burns to the top of his head, his back and the back of
his legs.

Community Fire Company Chief James Greene and
assistant chief Chris Calvo also were injured fighting
the fire, but were released Monday from Robert Wood
Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
