View Full Version : Will I get disqualified for this?

Im in the process of filling out my personal history packet. I ran into the question asking if I have ever sold or bought drugs. 8 years ago, in college, a friend of mine left a quarter size amount of pot at my house. I don't smoke pot, so being a broke college student I sold it to the neighbors for I think $20 just to get rid of it. Will I have to mark yes on this question? And if yes, then will they look at this as drug selling? YIKES!
Thanks for your help!

stg :(

Failure to disclose is a DQ. This question is sure to be asked during your polygraph examination. You did sell it and, with any luck, will get an opportunity to explain the situation to your interviewer. One way or another, you have to tell.

:p

Yes, if you are being honest you will have to mark "Yes" to selling drugs. Certainly you can explain the situation. Will it stop you from getting the job? Maybe... Some places may take your answer "Yes" (the truth) and your explination and give you a break. Other departments won't touch you because selling drugs is a FELONY.

When you have marijuana and/or use marijuana (in most cases) it is a misdemeanor. Maybe some states are different, but here in CA, having less than an OZ and/or using is a misdemeanor. Selling is a felony.

At least if you're honest and get the job, you never have to worrry about getting fired later on if someone found out about it and you had lied.

Good luck...

Hmm, I think another moral of the story is don't keep friends that do drugs.

I agree that this is not a slam dunk DQ because you were not "in business," so to speak. I also agree that your best bet is telling the truth.

Ya, but how would someone know if you sold drugs?

They would have no record or any information that you sold drugs. If someone just mentioned that you happen to SELL drugs, you would automatically be DQ'd?

I mean, if they have no proof on the computer or facts and they take someone's word on this.. wouldn't it be strange?.

ie) Ya, I know him. He sold drugs!
BI: Oh really? Thank you..

Bi: sorry, you are Dq'd for selling drugs to applicant.

The number of agencies performing polygrpah testing increases every day. The majority of larger Fed agencies conduct polygraphs, and a large percentage of state an local LE poly as well. After my Bureau poly next week, I will have had 3 polys. Each of my previous 2 polygraphs has asked "have you ever sold drugs for profit?" An agency might not be able to prove you sold drugs by out and out detective work, but they WILL get you on the poly. The only recourse you have is to be up front and open about what you have done and hope you can find an agency that won't automatically DQ you for selling drugs, even though it was just once. Using drugs is bad enough, but selling them will raise credibility issues for any agency. Involvement with drugs is a BIG DEAL to any agency, especially considering that such a high percentage of all crime can be traced to drugs somewhere along the line. Alpine, always keep the poly in the back of your head, they will ask many questions about drugs when they adminiter it, trust me.

ah.. Well, in that case.. it wasn't like I Was going NOT to tell them, I was just trying to figure out how they would find out.

anyhow, when I was 16-17yrs old, for like 1month I sold cocaine.

I dont know how this will look. I will tell them, I was never caught nor would they ever find out about this.

So, for like 1 month, you were a drug dealer. Color is anyway you like, you're not going to clear a poly nor qualify for federal law enforcement.

And someone should have told you that a long time ago.

Sorry Alpine, but I would say it's time to look for a new career. Sactowngirl is going to have a difficult time finding an LE agency that will overlook selling MJ one time for $20. You sold cocaine for a month. I don't think you will be able to play the I was young and stupid card to get out of that one. You won't pass any poly, and if you find an agency that doesn't poly, and you lie about this and you ever get caught in your lie, your career would be over anyway. Maybe you can find a support position in LE but I don't think you will find a swarn LE position having sold cocaine for profit for a month.

At my department that would DQ you from any job. Sworn or Support. Hell you have to pass a poly and backround to be a janitor, because you are listed as a "Police Employee"

I was trying to be optimistic OhioGuy. All the departments I am familiar with would DQ you for that as well. I know that no PD is going to look the other way for a sworn position though.

Alpine692003: I'm curious about your question and what you are doing at this time. We've had similar questions come up in the past and many from CJ students. My comment about being surprised that you weren't aware of the difficulties you face in LE wasn't meant to be smart-ass. It's just that we've seen people invest thousands of dollars in education, only to find no one ever told them that they couldn't work in their chosen profession because of past DQ issues.

That has been point out is a great disservice to the student/applicant and a waste of your time and expectations.

I'd like to know if you are a CJ student or are just exploring career opportunities. Thanks, DM

Well there are two ways they will know.

One and the best way, is for you to be honest and up front about it.

Two is the Polygraph.
