I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. When I do push-ups regularly, my wrists tend to get pretty sore. I'm not sure what to do to prevent the problem.

Any suggestions?

When you find yourself sitting around your desk or watching TV or something, grab one hand with the other and stretch it around. Flex and rotate it as much as possible. This will help stretch your wrists and gradually you should see that pain go away. Or maybe you should stop doing 300 pushups at a time.

Try to do push-ups on your fists. You'll see it doesn't take that much more energy and takes the pressure off of your wrists. Before you try it, you may want to leave this post on the board for a couple days just to make sure I'm not giving you bad advice. I've done this way a few times when my wrists were hurt and it didn't seem to harm me.

You may want to put down a small towel though if you are doing them on a wood or concrete floor.

It may also be the position you are putting your arms.

From an article I have read...
Pushups - Placing your hands in the wrong position can seriously effect your maximum score. A perfect location for your hands is just outside shoulder width. This position enables the chest, shoulders and triceps to be equally taxed. Keep hands at shoulder height when in the up position. Your pushups will be weakened if your hands are too low, wide, close or high.

Try push up bars!!!

If that does not work, and does it only hurt ot get sore when you do push ups or it is tender to the touch or any other activities as well.

If/when I do too many pushups, I get a cyst, only on my left wrist. In the Corps the Navy Doc said it was a Ganglean (I spelled it the way it sounds, so don't look it up using that spelling) and that trash hurts, even to the touch. You will know if if this is it, as you will feel a hard raised bump underneath your skin. There is surgery to remove it, but no guarantee that it will not come back.

I eased up on the pushups. I had one of these cysts a week before my DEA PTT. I used an old remedy they told me about. They used to take a heavy book, and hit the cyst (your wrist with it) until the sac containing the fluid in the cyst popped. A couple of days before the PTT, I just banged my hand against the wall and that did the trick.

But yeah get some push up bars, as that will place your wrist at a different angle, however, you do need to practice the pushup the way you will be required to perform them at whatever academy you are getting ready for, but in the mean time the push up bars will keep you in shape for that event as well.

I know the feeling of the sore wrists during push ups. 2 Years ago I broke my right wrist in a struggle with a convicted felon trying to get my gun. The Dr told me to wear the brace for 4 weeks to allow it to heal, but it was very cumbersome and I only wore it one week. BIG MISTAKE!! Apparently there are ALOT of small bones in the wrist and now I have arthritis in it, and when it is cold or when I put alot of stress on it, I remember why I should have worn the brace!

Hard Dawg,

Have you tried any of the magnitized bracelets, say those put out by Nikken. I do not have any, only because they did not have them in stock. The gym manager at my gym is an authorized dealer for them and he gave me a quick demo. You can take my word for it that it woks but to really believe it you have to see one of those demo's for yourself. See if you can find an authorized dealer in your area for a free demo, performed on you, no video tapes and the sort.

It may be worth your time and effort to help with the pain.

Another example of the value of these forums -- I had all but given up on push ups until I learned of push-up bars, right here in this thread. Went to Oshman's and for 14 bucks snagged me a set of these things -- WOW what a difference. Now I can work on building those little muscles that make push ups possible.

Thanks a million!

Exactly what I have been saying. Be sure to return the favor if you know the answer to something, or you have some good info, despite the fact that no one has asked for it yet, share it anyway!!!

Flat out forgot about push up bars! ;)

I was seeing a physical therapist for another issue, and asked about the pushups pain because flexibility was a topic being discussed. She said some people just aren't very flexible. She suggested trying the stretches previously mentioned, but also said it might not make a difference.

If I have my hand straight out as my arm, and then tilt my wrist back, I am only somewhere around a 50 to 60 degree angle before there is some painful pressure. If I "deal" with the pain, I can maybe get another few degrees.

I think I've gotta find me a couple of those bars. I push more weight doing pushups than I do using the universal gym in my garage!

Well, right now I can almost do 10 before my shoulders start to implode. But I'm working my way up. I'm still dropping weight and my running is going very well. So I'll get there, but the push up training seems to hit muscles that lifting just doesn't reach.
