What kind of exercises are best to do to get ready for the physical testing. I have a few more years before i am done with college, but i want to be in shape when the time comes. Should i do more cardio, like running, swimming, etc, or a weights, or a combo of the two?

my friends in LE have suggested being able to run at least a 10 minute mile (I'm shooting for under 8 mins. right now), OUTSIDE, since a treadmill makes the kick easier. They've also suggested pushups, pullups, the "old school" calisthenics stuff which is always good. Weights are good. I also was told that it would be good to get in some Martial Arts training. I'm going to start training in a Kempo-Jujutsu combo Friday. I was told jujutsu was good because it teaches "ground combat." I guess I'll find out what that means. :bounce:
I'd guess, from all of that, the general advice is to be cardiovascularly fit, with good flexibility, and I think I'm getting a message that heavy weight-training is good too, but not entirely necessary (but I'm gonna do it anyway because I like it!).
But, again, what do I know? That's just what I've heard.

Thanks for the advice, do you know if it would be better to do sprints alot too, of just jog a mile? Should i train furter, say 2-4 miles?

I'd check out which departments you think you might be interested in and get their PT standards (sometimes they're available on the web)--that way you have an idea of what's in store for you and you can tailor your training accordingly.

Good Luck--
Katie

I hate sprints. BUT, yeah, common sense would dictate - after all, what is a foot chase but a sprint? You don't want it to become a marathon. Short bursts of speed. :crying:
Thanks for bringing that up.
