cany anyone suggest a good fitness book thats focus is on running, cals, situps, push ups, free weight exercise?
any any bodybuilding books that you have found helpful?
One thing that I have learned over the years is that many fitness books tend to focus on one specific type of training. While they can be good, what I have found to be the more helpful is (and this is not a plug, its just my opinion) Mens Health Magazine. Every issue covers things like cardio, weight training programs, strength training, diet, nutrition, sex, etc. Very broad in scope but the info is very useful and very accurate. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn more about health and fitness. Hope this helps.

From your name, I am guessing you are or were an ECO in NY, is this a correct assumption? I know this is a little off topic but what is the physical training like in the ECO process? I think I am going to sign up for the upcoming exam, and am a little curious about the physical aspects of the training. Thanks and sorry for the tangent.
Well, yes, your assumption is correct, I was an Environmental Conservation Officer in NY for a real brief period...real brief. But I did get a taste of the fitness level they expect out of you during training.
First off, you have to score within the 50th percentile or better even to be considered for the job. I forget the name of the standard they use but it is based upon your age and how you stack up against others in your age group. Its the basic 1.5 mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, sit and reach and a 100 meter swim. If you train for the test, its not too bad. Once you get there, however...
I must say that the PT instructors in the academy were in unbelieveable shape. You'll run two days per week and do calisthenics three days per week...all at 5:45 am. Our first run was 3.5 miles and it increased from there. The cals went for 45 minutes straight and they were the most rigorous workouts I have ever done. I dropped 10 pounds in the first week. That being said, you will be in the 80th percentile by the time you graduate. The PT is tough but it is totally feasible...just have to put your mind to it.
I hope this was helpful. If you need more info, send me a PM.

I'll second the rec for Men's Health. I also subscribe to Men's Fitness and have thoroughly enjoyed both.
As for specific workouts using running and cals, try some of Stewart Smith's. He's a former SEAL who's written a few. I have his "Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness". It has a "12 weeks to BUD/S" workout to get hopefuls in shape before they show up. Lots of pushup/running/pullup/swimming routines. I didn't bother with the 12-week program myself, but incorporated a lot of the routines into my schedule--particularly the pullup ones.
He has a new one out, Special Ops Fitness (or something like that). I haven't picked it up yet.
I think his books are ~$14 at Amazon.com. In my opinion it was money well spent.
