I just went out and bought a Springfield 1911-A1 today. And the ONLY bad thing I can say about it is the 7 round single stack magazines. But I love the way this weapon feels in my hand. I'm tempted to retire my Sig Sauer P226/357sig.

Since I'm on a limited buget, where's the cheapest source of good quality level one holster and mag pouch? And any good sources for magazines??

Thanks,

David

If you want the best in mags, go with Wilson! They also hold 8rds, so with one in the pipe you should be good to go.

I carry a Kimber Pro Tac II with Wilson mags and they work flawless.

I also like the Wilson magazines (I'd stay away from the Chip McCormick though...I have one 10 rounder and it's @#ap... IMHO)

If you're looking for a very affordable kydex holster you might want to try a Front Line (made in Israel) ...they're available through U.S. Cavalry for about $25.00 each. They also make great spare mag holders. Comp Tac also has great Kydex (especially concealables, I've got a Gurkha and love it)...although a little bit more expensive.

Leather holsters...there are numerous good manufacturers (Horseshoe Leather, Kramer, Andrews Leather, Alessi, Milt Sparks, etc...)

I routinely carry either my Kimber Ultra CDP, My Colt Defender or my Para C7.45 LDA

I like carrying my 1911s. I carried them on duty off and on for about 15 years. The new Colts (new roll marked 1991 series) are great guns as well as the Springfields. Some of the Springfield Mil Spec series, including the WWII repro, are very good buys. I have the Mil Spec Ultra Compact and like it a lot.

As far as magazines, I have had very good luck with factory Colt and Springfield 7 round mags. I also have been pleased with the Wilson 7 and 8 round mags. Chip McCormick's Shooting Star mags are pretty much the same mag as you will get if you get Colt 8 round or Kimber 8 round mags, as they all have Chip's patented follower and the mag bodies are made by Metalform most of the time. McCormick also makes 8 round Power Mags which I have not tried, but I have heard good reports on them and they are not as expensive as Wilson. 1911's can be finickey creatures so I am not a big fan of the 10 round mags, and would stick with either the 7 or 8 round mags from McCormick, Colt, Springfield or Wilson.

Your new Springfield should feed everthing you can stick in the mag. The only thing it may need is a little polishing on the feed ramp to smooth/polish it out. A Q-tip and some Flitz metal polish on the feed ramp along with a few minutes of working the Flitz into the ramp with the Q-tip should make it mirror bright, smooth and very polished.

A good source for magazines online is CDNN Investments. I have ordered from them several times and have been pleased with their prices and service.

Norinco full size 1911 - all stock except for trigger, hammer sear and firing pin. Norinco use to be THE best bang for the buc until Slic Willy banned them

A question for the gun gurus on here. I carry a Glock on-duty, but want to buy a 45 auto 1911 for personal use. I already own a Sig 220 and enjoy it, but have always wanted a 1911 and have narowed it down to a Springfield Armory stainless steel model PX9151L. On their webiste it is listed as a "loaded" pistol coming with extras like a high grip beavertail and ambi-safety. Yet, when I checked out some gunshops with websites they listed it as coming with a coupon for the extras. Do they come 'loaded' from the factory this way or do I have to send it backto them? Also is this probably one of the better 45's out there? I can't afford a Les Baer or Wilson competition gun, and thought this is the best bang for the buck. Opinions?

Moderaguy I went over to another forum I frequent where there are Springfield 1911 Gurus and posted your question. This is the response I got from one of them:

i just put one on layaway yesterday ($499 ) it's got everything (full length guide rod, ambi safety, adjustable trigger, high beaver-tail, lightweight hammer, etc...) but night sights. the coupon is for extra accessories (mags, adjustable sights, cleaning kits, etc...)

Check out the S&W 1911. I have read good things about them but dont have any personal experience with them. I have owned all Colts except for one Charles Daly that performed flawlessly. They may also be a maker to check in to. Or for ALL your 1911 questions check out this
1911 Site (http://www.1911forum.com/forums/)

My unit was issued springfield armory TRPs, but we had numerous problems with them and switched to the H&K USP, 45 in variant 9, which is condition 1 "cocked and locked". its a great gun and we have had no problems with it.

Springfield MilSpec with a beavertail saftey with Wilson mags...in a Lou Allessi DOJ...its my sexy go to court gun!

I hear this about 3 times each day when i wear it...

"Do you know your gun is cocked?"

"Yep, its the way all REAL guns are carried"

and if they have a Glock I say..."So is yours!"

Thanks Lupey for getting the info for me. I ended buying a new Springfield Armory model PX9151L (stainless loaded) for $650. I had no luck finding it for less, unlike some other list members. The only enhancements I plan on are night sights and getting the front strap checkered. Any recommendations on where to get some night or 3 dot sights installed at a good price? Can I send my slide to SA for the sights?

My County Sheriff only allows me to list 3 firearms on my CCW card for carry so they are:

Colt 1991A1 w/Videcki trigger
Glock 26

My AFRC unit is in AZ so I have long drives for each UTA. I carry the Colt concealed until I cross the river, then I carry it openly in an M7 holster and then lock it up and check it into the base armory when I get there (I'm not sure if a CA CCW is accepted in AZ but I don't think it is as yet).

Until I sort out which 9 mm ammo I can trust my life to, I won't carry the Glock. Not yet, anyway. 1200 rounds through the Colt so far and not a single problem at all (none with the factory mags, either). I trust that gun.

I'd next like to get a Kimber of some sort, possibly a TLE .45.

These are who I know of in your area:

There's Nu-Line Guns in St. Charles.
They're a nationally known custom gun builder, and they always make the American Handgunner 100 top 'smith's list. Their on Caulks Hill Road in St. Charles.

Then you Have HUNTER CUSTOMS (http://www.huntercustoms.com/index.htm) in osborn MO

Frank Duren in Republic, MO (Duren Gunsmithing)

Derek Williams in Rogersville, MO (Options Unlimited)

Dan Parker in the same general area of SW Missouri, though I'm not sure of where

If you're in southern Missouri, you can look at northern AR, too. Wilson's is in Berryville and they still work on guns as well as building on their own slides and frames. Ross Carter is in AR, too, but I don't know if he is back to work yet. There's another guy in Berryville but I don't remember his name but he's been spoken of very highly here.

Ed Brown is in (sort of) central Missouri. Richard Heinie is right across the Mississippi north of St. Louis in Quincy.

I'm confused. All new SA "Loaded" 1911s are supposed to come standard with Novak night sights.

In fact I just checked that model on the website and it says it has the Novak Low Mount Tritium Sights.

Yes, it has Novak low profile sights, but they are not night sights. I checked their website, and only the parkerized full-size has night sights, but not my stainless. I plan on calling SA later this week to see what the cost will be to swap them out. The novak site lists them for almost two bills with installation (i.e. too steep for me).

Hey now I get it. I thought all loaded models came with the night sights, I went back and looked and see what you're talking about now. Sorry about the confusion.

1911s known for contributing to the accurate, rapid firing of which ever cartridge you choose. I've found that to be the case and when it is up to me, they're my first choice; carry, HD, whatever.

I carry a Kimber CDP and use McCormick Powermags. I like the magazine because it has an extra coil of spring giving the rounds a little more push, but dislike the metal follower in the mag. When I purchase new magazines, I will go with Wilson mags - they have a solid plastic follower.

.... bought a SA Loaded PX 9109L a couple years back. A park'ed full size that when heated at the range, would give three/four round bursts.

Upon complete disassembly, I found a metal preservative (cosmoline?) within the South American produced frame, hadn't been removed when assembled.

Summized when the firearm warmed up, the preservative would hold the adjustable trigger just so....

Talk about looks upon people's faces standing adjacent to me on the line and imagine my face was pure... "what the h*ll just happend?"

BTW - SA has a great customer service department. They cleaned up the frame and replaced the sear / disconnector. Also gave me some more "loaded" coupons for the trouble. Sold the 1911 shortly there after.

Regards!
