I am 18 years old, just acquired my EMT-B cert, and am going to start applying around to different ambulance companies. Most of which i've spoken to have told me to turn in their application, CPR card, EMT-B cert, a copy of my drivers licence and OPTIONAL DMV printout. Now here is my question,

About 1.5 years ago i rear-ended someone (non-injury) and got a point on my record. Since submitting the DMV printout is optional, should I give it to them or not? I know most companies are strict about DUI's but my accident doesnt seem too bad. what do you guys think?

So are you saying that you recieved a DUI in the accident or was it just a simple rear-end accident?

Well it was an accident and people have them I would turn it in that way it doesn't look like you are hiding anything. It is optional so the choice is yours and you have to make it but I suggest turning it in.

Sure..prior to starting my LE career I work for 6 years for several ambulance companies...I don't really think that you should have too much of a problem...if you had multiple moving violations in the past..dui's...operation after suspension..etc...then I could see some cause for worry...Overall most ambulance companies have a steady turnover rate esp for EMT Basics...so more often then not if company A won't hire you B or C will...What I'm more worried about is the New EMT (Some experinced ones included) behind the wheel of the ambulance when they take a response and drive like a crazy person to get to a minor call...or worse transport every patient like they're on deaths door...You will not do anyone any good if you crash the ambulance...so don't kill yourself to get to a call...don't take your sweet time either but find a safe and prudent medium....Overall you can have alot of fun on the job esp if you have some good partners and most places have some varied scheduals which allow for built in overtime and several days off...Anyway good luck...and any questions just let us know....

I would be honest about it and I WOULD turn in the DMV print out. It's really not a BIG problem so don't sweat it too much. Why type of agency are you appling for...hospital based, private, government based? Is it BLS Transport or BLS EMS or other?

I feel the same way Sgt Jack does. It can be fun but it can also burn you out. The key to making it work is all about who you work with. Many people in EMS, especially BLS would rather not be there and are using the position as a stepping stone (nurse, medic, FF, cop) so there is a high turn over rate.

Just remember to have fun, make friends and learn. As for the driving, just flow, be efficient, and get comfortable.

I'm a fairly new/young EMT as well so my advice to you is that EMS is 90% common sense + personaliy and 10% ability. Its the advice I got when i first started and I believe it.

you should be fine.

Report it, they are going to pull your DMV before they let you drive anyway....

Have fun, be nice to grunts and gomer's and don't forget every person you meet is a son, daughter, mom or dad.

How would you want yours to be treated in a similar situation?

PS

and remember there are no BP's with odd numbers...:D
