Paramedic is an EMT....One builds on the other. LA City fire will take joe schmo off the street and put him/her through an academy, where you earn your EMT-B. Then they may ask you to get your Medic or EMT-P after you have your probationary period complete.

Though they do do this, it is rare and the majority of people who apply for these jobs already have academy and paramedic certifications.

New Castle County Police in Delaware hire people and put them in paramedic training. They start at approx $35,000 a year and get paid while they are in school full salary and the dept even pays for school. There is a 5 year contract you have to sign, my sister in law was just hired it is very competitive and hard to get into. They hired 10 when she was hired.

Dekalb EMS (Dekalb County Georgia), noted as one of the best EMS organizations in the U.S., hires laypersons and trains then to the paramedic level. They run paramedics exclusively on their ambulances. However, Dekalb EMS is a separate department from Dekalb Fire.

I'm all too familiar with Dekalb. They're our major competition. But they have merged back with Fire. What our department is doing is researching the potential to solve the Paramedic shortage in our area and stay fully integrated, by hiring young, gung ho rookies. Put them through Fire school, and tap into their enthusiasm and train them as Paramedics. Forget about EMT. Just go all the way all at once. Just an idea. Not a popular one by any means. But it may be time to get aggressive.

I've heard a few departments are doing it; Miami-Dade, Dallas, to name a few. I need more and know how they do it.:o

Sounds like a plan. I think you're department can accomplish that goal with very aggressive preception during training. I came from the era of "you have to be a 9-1-1 EMT for a year first" mindset. I don't know your plans for training these recruits; but you probably know that Gwinnett Tech has an outstanding paramedic certificate program. I think that with the right amount of students Gwinnett will do the condensed paramedic training program. I take it you are with a neighboring county fire/rescue department; or a municipality within Dekalb County.

Good luck...

I hope that you will post your results. I for one am going through a Fire Science Program and obtaining my EMT-B certificate. I am also interested in obtaining a medic license. I am currently living in California but might be relocating to GA.

Thanks!
