View Full Version : EMT Jobs
Where do you find EMT jobs? I rarely see it on Monster or Hotjobs. Hardly see them in the classifieds either. Yet I hear there is always a demand for EMTs. Is there a popular medical jobs web-site?
Also, where do most recent certified EMT-B start of? Doing transports? EDs? It seems unusual for a recent certified EMT-B to go straight into ambulances in either private or public EMS. Right?
I am in New York City and want to do part-time EMT work.

When I worked for a pvt service I went right to them for a job. If there is a hospital based service that you are interested in go to the HR department and ask if they have any openings. You might be able to fill out an app and have it on file for the next opening.
You can also check some of the trade magazines such as Jems or Firehouse. They have job listings there as well. Mosty FD jobs but once in a while you can find some EMS jobs.
I have always been one to learn by jumping in with both feet. Trial by fire!! No better way to learn.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your job hunting. Welcome to the wonderful world of EMS.

most ambulance companies will put you into a rig right after you get all of the requisite certs out of the way.
A BLS ambulance is the starting point for most EMT-B's. You will likely get a training officer and be on some form of limitted probation until you prove your worth, but that shouldn't be all that difficult as an EMT or BLS rig doesn't do a whole lot more than BP's, lifting and transports. Occasionally you will get the odd angle fx or the coveted mid shaft femur, but for the most part its primary, secondary stabalize in the position of comfort or as found, treat for shock if necessary, high flow O2, vitals every 5-15 and if you are within reasonable distance to the hospital....scoop 'n run baby...

Like the others have said..just go on down to a few places and apply...as far as what type of calls your going to do will vary by the type of service..Most of the places I've worked were contracted with cities and towns to provide 911 service...along with doing regular facility transfers which are the backbone of most private services...if you can get on with a company that does both that would be good...If I recall right NYC has a lot of hospital based services that may supplement NYFD doing EMS calls..so the opportunity to do street work is there...Good Luck

Mikee,
I don't know where in NYC you are located but both Midwood and Lifeline are advertising for EMT-Bs as we speak. I'm pretty sure both of these outfits are in Queens.
Private EMS is just like any other private business. Submit a resume or fill out an application. Public agencies run a more formalized hiring process.
As others have said, most private agencies will have vacancies almost constantly. This is because the pay is low (usually) and non-emergent transports are the bread and butter of these outfits (usually). Hope this helps and good luck.
Thanks for the excellent responses.
Jimspoor: I am in Queens, so I'll definitely look into Midwood and Lifeline.
