To become a firefighter do you have to be an EMT? Can you just be a firefighter?
depends on where you want to work. Seems like the southern states, require it more than the northern states. What state are we talking about?
In Florida it is a requirement for most departments, even as an EMT-B it is still hard to get a job, but if your a EMT-P getting a job is no problem. Being a EMT-B can only help land you a job down the road because firefighters are needing to justify their need raises, and medical emergencies are much more frequent than fires.
Depends on the department.
For LAFD, the only requirements are (1) be at least 18 years of age, (2) have a high school diploma or GED, and (3) have a CA class "C" driver's license.
Since most applicants meet those requirements, it helps to be EMT certified, or have a AA in Fire Science or even a BA.
