I don't want to start a debate about how effective or ineffective the 9mm round is. I am issued the 9 and have no choice. That said the powers that be have recently changed our issue from a 115gr +p+ Gold Dot @ 1440 FPS or there abouts to a 124gr Gold Dot @ about 1160 FPS. They cited concerns about over penetration with the +p round. Does anybody have any test data or real shooting evidence about the effectiveness of these two rounds? I had a lot of confidence in the +p+ round, not backed up by data mind you, just a warm fuzzy feeling. I'm not sure how I feel about this new standard pressure round. I know that hitting the pump and the CNS is the key but I'm still feeling some seperation anxiety from that hotter round. Any thoughts? Should I just see a shrink?
Thanks for letting me vent, John

momentum = mass times velocity (p=mv, for those who remember physics)
115 grain bullet moving at 1440 feet per second has a momentum of 165,600 (no standard unit here - I don't feel like converting)
124 grain bullet moving at 1160 feet per second has a momentum of 143,840
By way of comparison, a five pound sack of flour tossed from a car going 60 mph has a momentum of 198,119. A five ounce MLB baseball thrown by a superhuman pitcher at 120 mph has a momentum of 24,453.
Simple math indicates that (assuming all energy is transferred from the bullet into the body the same way for each bullet, or "ceteris parabus" for you economists) you're taking a 13% decrease in power. However, you're able to put a lot more oomph onto a target than a major league pitcher who beans his batter.
Sorry for the math lesson...
