I was wondering how I can become an arson investigater. I am really interested in the field but dont know the steps towards becoming one. Any info on this field would be helpful such as their specific duties, work hours, etc...
Thank you very much.
This topic was brought up last week, do a search on this board for it. Basically, you first have to be an experienced LEO or Firefighter, as most all come from in-house.
1. Get a job on a paid department. (riding a truck)
2. A Degree in Fire Protection Technology helps, alot.
3. A whole bunch of certifications, like investigations, inspection, and public education.
Not saying this is mandatory, but you need experience being a fire fighter before you try to get on investigating. Get on a volunteer dept for experience. Then move to a paid position somewhere. Work toward getting as many certifications as possible. The more you know and have been schooled on, the better. Makes you a more attactive applicant.
When you do get on a dept, Paid or Vol, try to earn a good reputation in the fire community. Knowing people helps. I mean that as in networking. In an area where I live, medium sized county with small to medium sized cities, a well know person, who knows their stuff and has the certifications to back it up will usually get the job. Can't speak for big city departments. They are a different animal all together.
Like DelC, said, depending on location, law enforcment does the investigation. Here our fire marshals handle the investigation, unless it is an arson.
:hustle: I have been a NY State certified fire investigator since 1998. I have been a firefighter since 1977. I was able to turn my volunteer position into a thriving private enterprise by first becoming a building inspector and then an investigator. I hired out to insurance and mortgage companies. Feel free to pm me for more details.
