I am currently in school to become an EMT-B. I want to continue on and become a Medic after that. I would like to practice in Colorado when I am done. How soon before I become a medic should I start sending out my resume to places that are hiring?

The hiring of EMTs and paramedics is usually not as structured as that of LE. The exception being the large urban depts. where fire handles EMS as well.

Most organizations accept applications more or less continuously. For the large depts you have to wait and watch for open hiring and vacancy announcements.

The best advice I can give you is get friendly with staff at the outfits you are interested in. You will gain insight into environment, working conditions, etc. as well as timing your app.

As an aside I would suggest that you spend at least a year "in the street" as an EMT before you start medic school. You will learn more about the streets, the patients, the art and science of EMS, and most importantly, yourself than you ever thought possible.

Good Luck.

Maybe I misunderstood, but you are currently taking the Basic class and are inquiring about jobs as a medic? I'm not sure about requirements for the state you live in but in Illinois you have to be an EMT-B for a minimum of 6 months before you can get your Medic license. If you are looking for jobs as a Basic on a private company they are usually always hiring because the position is somewhat of a stepping stone.

WORK (VOLUNTEER OR PAID) AS AN EMT-B FIRST!!!!!! Get at least a year of field experience before you go on for your Paramedic certification. Trust me, if you go straight through both classes, you'll be hurting compared to others who worked in the field as an EMT. I've seen too many Paramedic students precepting, who can't even do a good BLS assesment and their already being taught to start IVs. Field experience is key, and it is much different than your classroom "by the book" training. Do yourself a favor and volunteer as an EMT for a while, you will enter Paramedic class feeling much more confident. Good luck
