I was diagnosed with depression 4years ago. Along with changing jobs and being more carefull on what I ate(caffeine) I may some serious life changes. Life in general is very stressfull in todays society. We have so many demands and so little time. Finding a decent paying job is tough.
Those are a few of many stressers life throws on you, however I have learned through reading some good books that one controls the way they feel. I will try to explain it the best I can.
If your house burns down, you feel terrible, right? Of course you do, its natural to feel depressed. However you control the way you are going to perceive this tragic event. It is not the end of the world. The sun will rise in the morning and life will go on. You will eventually pick up the pieces and move on. This may sound lame and cheesy, but its the truth. There is a good book called "the feeling good handbook" written by David Burns.
What I learned about our society is we have poor stress managing skills. From a young age we are taught to be competive, successfull, and so on., however very litte time is spent on teaching us how to deal with stress.
A lot of our personality stems from our enviroment including how you were raised. You may tend to deal with stress the same way your parents did.
My parent had poor stress managing skills, and in turn I never was taught good stress management. It took my illness along with a strong desire to change my personality. And believe me it was hard to do. Changing ones thought process or perception that has been engrained for years is not easy.
Well, finally deal with stress in a much healthier manner. I excersise, try to eat healthy, get plenty of sleep and drink a lot of water.
I still get stressed at times, and understand it's natural. I just give a 100% in whatever I do, and let the chips fall where they may.....hope this helps, and if anyone has any input please feel free. Stay positive, things always get better!!!
