I am appling to some 1811 positions and was wondering about thier firarm policy. I know every agentcy will be diffrant, but generally what is the policy?
Do you have to carry what you are issued? Or can you carry any approved weapon weapon as long as you buy it?
Is it better/easier to just carry what they give you?

The main reason I ask is I am left handed.

You'll find policies vary from agency to agency and most restrict carry to their weapons or from an approved list. No sweat on the left handed part as all federal handguns have the left handed switch. DM

As a lefty, I have found I do not like the SIG. I really like the P2000 that H&K has out, but I haven't shot it. I am curious if the LEM trigger is essentially like the Glock.

Is it better to just go with what they give you as far as paperwork and headache?

Assuming the P2000 LEM is anything like the HK USP Compact LEM, then yes. If by "like the Glock" you mean "pull the trigger, it will go BANG" then yes. There are literally no switches on that thing aside from mag release and slide release. If a round is chambered, it will fire when you pull the trigger.

You may not have an option if it's simply a case of you "preferring" a different weapon. Personal preference probably won't come into play for most agencies.

The only option you MAY have is where an agency will allow you to carry a smaller-framed weapon if your hands are too small to effectively shoot/operate the standard-issue weapon. Again, this isn't preference - it's just the fact that some people's hands are too small. For example, I worked for one agency where the standard-issue was a SIG 229, but where you could get a SIG 239 instead (I knew a couple of female agents and guys with smaller hands who had those - they were the exception and not the rule, however).

But again, it all depends on the agency.

The trigger pull on the p2000 is a LEM trigger which is long and heavy towards the end of the pull. It is NOT as forgiving as the LEM glocks. While I love HK, the p2000 will not win me over for target shooting. My USP40 on the other hand...... :D

I'm sure the differences are settle. I guess my question should be does the LEM feel like a DAO or a Glock?

Since you quoted me I assume you are asking me directly.
I don't have enough (any) training to tell. The trigger pull for the HK LEM model seemed too long to me. But I'm not at a point where I can really tell the difference in these things.

But I'm going to bow out of this conversation now before my lack of knowledge/training/common-sense gets me in trouble. I just thought you wanted to know mechanically if they were similar. (Yes, I think so, except for the Glocks' redundant safeties)
