Come on Bel...teach us all a lil' somethin' about your position...CC
The vacancy announcement really captures the outline of the position, but I thought maybe he wanted some specifics that would better be left to PM'ing or vetting each other through .gov e-mails.
If you just want to talk some shop, we can sure do that, I guess. FYI, dmclark would be a great resource for this topic, too. He seems like a pretty helpful guy, I'm sure he wouldn't mind sharing his perspective of the program if you reach out to him.

I have a quick question. To qualify the annoucement says you should have a 3.5 GPA. That is much higher than any other Agency I have applied to. FBI/DEA and ATF are all 2.95.
I'm just curious as to why the standard is so much higher.

I'm afraid I can't answer that question, as I have not even finished my degree yet!!! I came in with the experience requirements. The whole Outstanding Scholar path is new for the hiring process. It looks like you can come in with the experience and write KSA's, or come in under the education requirements and not write the KSA's (although they encourage you to do so!!!) I'd say we have more people without degrees than with them.
On another note, I've received some PM's regarding 6c coverage and armed status. This is NOT an armed FLE position. This position is geared towards civil inspections/investigations/enforcement. ASI's are not armed and do not have arrest powers. Sorry if this is a buzzkill for all of you gunning for the 1811-type jobs. It's a good gig nonetheless.

I am wondering if there is crossover here with FAA Special Agents and/or Investigators? Overlap in work? Do you know? I know a lot of current/former FAA SA's, Red Team'ers. Now THAT is a kick A** job, Red Teams!
Then you probably know that there are Red Teams based at TSAHQ. DM

Reminds me....as 16 year olds, my cousins and I called all the big war game moves on a red team of faculty members at a war college. The students were pissed when they discovered that some teenagers kicked their a$$es. :D

FAA's aviation security mandates are now hazardous materials (formerly known as "dangerous goods"), cargo security, and physical security regulatory oversight. The hazmat portion is insuring industry/carrier compliance regarding the transport of hazardous materials. This applies to things such as large shipments of anything combustible, etc. The physical security portion is insuring compliance with security programs regarding FAA buildings and facilities. Cargo security is insuring compliance with cargo shipment regs. No more gun toters in FAA. The only ones were FAMs and they are now under ICE, after a brief stint in TSA. FAA also has "aviation safety inspectors" within their Flight Standards division. These are inspectors who insure compliance regarding safety issues such as pilots and mechanics having proper logbook entries, training hours, etc. FAA maintenance ASI's may also be the affiants for federal search warrants but are prohibited from executing the warrant. The DOT-OIG or U.S. Marshals Service will usually execute the warrant. These types of investigations occur with forged aircraft parts. TSA now has the mandate for Aviation Security Inspection. These are unarmed inspectors whose duties consist of insuring things such as regulatory oversight regarding security checkpoints, airport perimeter access, background investigation compliance, and I.D. media. There are armed 1811's within TSA. Their duties are mainly internal affairs type work.

"There are armed 1811's within TSA"
Something changed since they all got the ultimatum in '03? Last I heard was there is no armed law enforcement component to TSA. OIG is at DHS.

Internal Affairs is not limited to OIG's. Many agencies, including TSA, work internal affairs cases prior to, or in conjunction with, OIG's. Plus, not all internal affairs cases are "fraud, waste, or abuse" cases. There are most definitely armed 1811's within TSA, although there does not seem to be much ryme or reason as to where they are located, how many there are, or how there duties vary from airport to airport.

Ken,
Actually, yesterday I learned 3 new things. However, I've already forgotten 1 of them, which brings me down to 2. I don't plan to learn anything new today, so that should average me out to 1. Any more than 1 and my head starts to hurt. :D

Some (not all) of the TSA Assistant Federal Security Directors for Law Enforcement are also armed 1811's. I forgot to mention them...
All TSA AFSD's for Law Enforcement are armed 1811's. They are 6c positions with LEAP. There's not that many nationwide.

...actually we have the cargo security function now. FAA still regulates the Hazmat portion of that area, but security is all us.

BelAir1 & DMClark,
I stand corrected. I did know that cargo security went to TSA. I keep thinking it stayed FAA because some of the TSA/FAA personnel are colocated here in ATL. The TSA cargo security buddy of mine used to be FAA and I can't get through my thick skull that he's now TSA.
DM, I met an AFSD for LE who was an unarmed 1801 about 6 months ago. Are they steadily replacing them with 1811's? It certainly makes sense for all to be 1811's...
They're all 1811's at this time. DM

A Red Team generally conducts tests of security systems by acting as the bad guys would. In the case of FAA, that meant sending teams of Civil Aviation Security Specialists (Special Agents) out to airports throughout the US and world to test the various aspects of security.
