DENVER - A Denver sheriff's deputy who was injured in a car crash over the weekend died Tuesday from his injuries.
The accident happened around 2:40 a.m. Sunday. Deputy Steven Martinez was off duty at the time. Investigators say he was driving southbound on I-25 when he exited at Alameda, failed to negotiate a turn and crashed through a guardrail and into the Platte River.
Martinez was taken to Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition. A passenger in the vehicle was treated and released.
Martinez was a seven-year-veteran of the department who was assigned to the county jail and most recently, the court services division at the city and county building.
The investigation into the accident is still underway. A release from the Denver sheriff's department said Deputy Martinez "will be deeply missed by friends, family and deputies alike."
