If your department requires you to have certain equipment, can the price of that equipment be deducted from your taxes. For example, as a Reserve Officer, we are not issued sidearms. Since we have to purchase our own weapons, can the price of the weapon be taken off taxes? Thanks

Yes, if you itemize. I would seek the assistance of a CPA or other accountant to find out exactly how you go about doing this.

Save your paperwork and long form your taxes. If it's work related or will be used at work (Scanners, boots, insulated clothing, pouchs, ammo, range time, weapons, other toys, club organizations, union dues, travel to court, parking fees for court, etc) claim it!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are in a paid role, then you deduct it as an unreimbursed work expense.

If you are a reserve, you actually deduct it as an expense related to charitable work. Even though the government isn't a charity, governments and churches are included in the "charity" section, along with non-profits and other registered groups.

Hope that helps. Keep every peny you can. If you're a reserve, don't forget mileage too!
