Any Departments or Officers use lanyards on your sidearm? Street or SWAT Officers?
No, but I know some guys who probably should have. :D
I have seen some mounted guys as well as marine units use them...Makes sense to me. Getting off of your horse to recover your pistol would be a pain...let alone diving to get it!! :(
They would be handy when you set the gun on the back of the toilet and tried to walk out without it, too. :D
We don't use them over here. Haven't seen any LEO's that do. Last time I saw lanyards being used was in the military. Ususally, the small boat crew guys would use them. I guess having your sidearm falling in the drink wouldn't be a good thing.

Only time I have ever seen them used was in ceremonial stuff or the military.
The only place I recall ever seeing them in use, if my memory serves me correctly, was in Europe.
The only time I have ever used one was when flying helicopter interdiction on OPBAT. I made one from parachute 550 cord because I would be sitting next to an open door for the whole flight, and I could just picture getting back and looking down and seeing nothing but an empty holster. :D

I don't know about cops, but we did have a guy in the Corps who was narcoleptic and not only was he to have a lanyard on his weapon, but we also "dummy corded" it to him.
AHHHHH......The good ole days :D

Seems like every unit had one of those. After ours left his SAW in the hanger deck and squid picked it up, he had it attached to him 24/7.
I don't know which is worse, the fact he left it or that a squid picked it up.
Speaking of squids and lanyards, a Spru Can (Spruance class destroyer for ye landlubbers) that I was on in the Gulf didn't have enough holsters for their boarding teams. As the rather large Navy boarding team lined up at the Armory, both the holsters and the guns started to run out, first the Berettas, then what .45s they had. The last bunch at the end of the line each received two .38 revolvers with lanyards on them, no holsters, dump pouches or nothing. These poor saps were told by the Gunner to tie the lanyard around their belt and stick the gun in their pockets. Unbelievable.....

Lanyards; in the Military we called them dummy cords. Pvt. Schmuckatelli ties all of his sensitive items to his web gear so he will not lose it. Pistols, NVGs, compass, etc. You get the idea.

We use them on the tactical team, as we keep our pistols in thigh holsters. We started this after a Navy SEAL instructor that worked with us for a year suggested it. I'm not positive, but if I remember correctly, he said the SEAL's used them as well.

Yep, don't want your secondary weapon to go by the wayside.
Any of you Marines know, does FR use them too?

We had them in all the units I was in in the Army. Now I was a Scout so I can see way with running thru bushes and trees all day and a M9 in a crappy Holster well also carrying a long gun.

Yes........the officers assigned to air assault (certified to deploy from our helos) on our SWAT team have them issued. However I believe the only time they put them on is during operations where they are going to be in or around the aircraft, which isn't often.
