Chief of Police Anthony D. Lucas, 32, of the French Camp, Mississippi Police Department was shot and killed in the line of duty February 4 while assisting the Ackerman Police Department in a vehicle pursuit of five suspects.

The pursuit began when an Ackerman City officer made a traffic stop in Ackerman of a vehicle with five individuals in it, according to Sheriff Doug McHan of the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department.

The suspects fled in their vehicle after being stopped, heading for French Camp. Chief Lucas, who served as a Sheriff's Deputy in Choctaw County, and who was on patrol in French Camp, was called in to assist. Upon reaching their residence in French Camp, one of the suspects fled into the woods, and the other four went into the home. Chief Lucas and an Ackerman Officer entered the house in pursuit.

Moments later Lucas was shot and eventually pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner. All five suspects were arrested.

"[Lucas] was only a part time officer in French Camp. The town couldn't afford to hire an officer full-time and he was willing to take $30 a month to provide the people there with police cover," McHan said.

Lucas was a native of Ackerman and began his career as an officer there. He then worked for the Mississippi Department of Corrections for seven years as a full time parole and probation officer. He was Chief of Police in French Camp part time during those seven years.

I attended Tony's funeral yesterday. It was weather befitting the day...cold, windy, and rainy. We had a very good turnout and I believe his widow was happy to see us there. During the procession, there were blue lights as far as you could see. Agencies ranged from tiny local police departments to FBI to State Wildlife to US Forest Service Law Enforcement and US Park Rangers. Obviously, there was a very heavy state turnout since Tony was a fulltime state officer. He died doing what he loved. We are diminished.
