Bloomington, IN -- Someone in a passing car apparently fired a fatal shot at a Monroe County Jail guard as he drove home from work, police said.
William Brand, 39, Bedford, was shot on Ind. 37, south of Bloomington early Tuesday, Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Brad Swain said.
A witness driving north saw Brand's truck leave the road and strike an embankment about 1:45 a.m., police reports said. The witness reported seeing a car next to Brand's truck in the passing lane.
That vehicle did not stop after Brand crashed, Swain said. The witness pulled over and flagged down another driver, who called police on a cell phone. Brand was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators found a bullet hole in the upper section of driver's door on Brand's truck.
"We're focusing on if there's anything in Brand's professional or personal life that would provide any information," Swain said, "but he had a good rapport with inmates and employees."
Brand was married and had a 3-year-old son, Swain said.
