Hello all,

Just a quick question regarding those ear pieces being used frequently by uniformed guys. I am thinking about purchasing one but was wondering how to hide the wire from radio-ear under my uniform shirt. We are using HT1000 and XTS2500 radio's.

Any suggestions/comments?

I used to really like the Earhugger ones, they were cheap, light and comfortable but there are so many better units available now. Go to dubya, dubya, dubya, dot earphoneconnect dot com. They have some nice stuff that won't break you wallet.

I'll second that plug. I have two sets of radio wires/mics purchased from earphoneconnect.com, and I really like the set up as well as the sound quality. They also have great service reps who assisted me with ordering the correct equipment.

From a Uniform COP, I've worn one and still have one available in my locker.

Here is the trick, put the ear piece on and clip it to your vest on the top portion of your back. Next, suit up and let the cord hang down your appropriate radio side of your torso. Once you get your trousers and belt on, reach into your pants and pull the cord up to where your radio will connect. Yet, don't pull out to much cord to get caught on other items.

The only problem that I found is that after 8 hrs of wear, your ear can get a little fatigued. Yet, it works great when running street data checks and the perps are trying to listen to your radio traffic. They often wonder why they are being hooked up, when they never heard the radio respond. :)

We use an ear piece that is actually molded for our ear. It's custom made and very comfortable.

Molded ear pieces are great because they stay in your ear and don't rough up the inside of your ear after 8 hours. The only problem I have with molded ear pieces is that they block out most other background noise, and you can only hear what's transmitted over the radio. That only leaves you with one good ear. I always had to pull my ear piece out when trying to have a conversation. The earpieces that came with the wires I purchased from Earphoneconnect seems to resolve that problem.

That said, if you still want a molded ear piece, many agents have purchased theirs from hearing aid companies. The sales rep prepares the mold, and you don't have to worry about the guesswork. I spent about 25 dollars for one and it was ready in a week or so.

The modern molded earpieces are open ended; they allow outside ambient noise in, so your ear doesn't feel clogged-up or muted.

I run my wire down the side of my vest and up, around the tucked-in shirt.

You could also have a buttin hole sewed into your shirt to facilitate the wire.
