View Full Version : My Gun Is Filthy

I have a filthy gun.
I own/carry a Glock 17 9mm. The thing is filthy. Tomorrow I'm going to give it a basic cleaning like we learned at the Academy. I'm curious to know about what Armorers can do beyond just a basic bore brush scrub of the barrel. How much does it usually cost to have an Armorer give a gun a once over and a good deep clean?

How filthy is filthy? Is this something that could be handled with a liberal application of Gun Scrubber or Brake Cleaner (Brake NOT Carb cleaner!), a stainless steel brush (aka GI toothbrush), a brass bore brush, a few patches, and some Hoppes? Getting all the stuff you need to clean your gun a few hundred times yourself should cost less than $25. :o
BTW, your signature quote cracks me up!

I have a lot of dust and even what appears to be small hairs from my knuckles or something inside. (i have monkey knuckles) Most of it can be cleaned, I think, by simply running a brush through there. But I'm curious about the grime and stuff that gets into crevices here and there that I never think about...
And I'm glad you like my quote! :) Meth-Heads are always good for quotes.
You should be able to easily do yourself. Glocks are the one firearm that I can completely disassemble and put back together within 10 minutes. If you go to topglock.com/info/info.htm they have step by step instructions on taking your Glock apart. Just make sure to never lubricate your firing pin or firing pin channel.
P.S.- If you are going to take the firing pin spring off watch out for the firing pin cups. They like to get lost and are a pain to get back on till you have practice.
As BLH says, the Glock only has a few pushpins holding the internals together. If you break it down that far, you will be surprised how much junk gets in there. After cleaning, make sure you do a complete function check before you go 10-8 (In service) again.

Break it down as far as you can and let individual parts soak in Break Free.

LEARN YOUR FIREARM! CLEAN IT REGULARLY!
I would take apart the slide/firing pin assembly and soak that.
Unless you are real comfertable with it or it is really, really dirty, I wouldn't worry about disassembling the Frame/trigger assmebly.(I REALLY MEAN THIS!!!) Maybe a good liberal spraying of break free would do the trick. I was an Armor in the Army. Taking apart the trigger assmbly was the job of a CERTIFIED ARMOR. (eventhough some guys did it)
Unless you have a problem at the range or with normal function. I wouldn't worry about taking it to an Armorer. (unless you can't put it back together , don't laugh it happens..... especially when you go as far as disassembling the frame/trigger assembly)

Being a Glock Armorer, I have found it easier to break the entire weapon down and clean every part. After a while, you get into a routine and its much easier and cleaner that way. For the small parts, gun scrub and a kitchen strainer works great.

NOT[/i] Carb cleaner!)
Don't use chlorinated brake cleaner, use NON-Chlorinated.

Thanks for the advice everyone! :)
If your not comfortable breaking it all the way down, soak the frame in Hoppe's #9 for 30 minutes and blow it out with some compressed air. You'll get it pretty clean and won't have to worry about a possible screw up. Make sure to wear face and eye protection when working with compressed air!!.

First off I wondered; why is your gun dirty? But I just shook it off and found this for you; good luck.
From the Glockmeister webpage:
Cleaning the Field Stripped Firearm
The Glock pistol should be cleaned after each shooting session. Once field stripped, the barrel and chamber are easily cleaned from the chamber end. The inside of the slide and receiver should be wiped clean along with the outside of the barrel. We suggest one of the many quality non-toxic solvents that are available in todays gun cleaning market. This will ensure proper functioning of your Glock pistol.
As with any semi-automatic pistol, Glock pistols should not be cleaned by merely locking the slide to the rear and inserting the cleaning rod from the muzzle end. This can cause excessive amounts of solvents to build-up in both the receiver, slide and possibly contribute to malfunctions of the pistol. The pistol should be field stripped every time it is cleaned.
The inside of both the chamber and the barrel should be wiped completely dry once they have been thoroughly cleaned. The breech face and the area under the extractor claw should both be absolutely dry and free of any debris after cleaning.
The slide rail cuts should be cleaned thoroughly by using a clean patch on the end of a toothbrush-type cleaning tool.
With the clean patch wrapped over the brush portion of the toothbrush, thoroughly clean the slide rail cuts of all debris and solvents.
All other areas of the slide and receiver should be checked for cleanliness. Most parts in the receiver may be wiped with a clean, soft cloth.
After the parts in the receiver have been cleaned, they should be wiped dry with a clean, soft cloth. All solvents should be wiped from the parts so the parts are clean and dry,
Note: The Glockmeister has found that 6" cotton tipped applicators (wooden stems) by Patterson Dental Company can get into the corners and hard to get at areas. I have also found that the wooden tip is great to clean out the slide rail cuts. Just a suggestion!
The Glock does not require excessive lubrication, please refer to the LUBRICATION section to see detailed instructions.
Lubricating the field stripped firearm
To properly lubricate your Glock pistol, after it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, use a clean patch that has been slightly dampened with a quality gun oil. Wipe the barrel, the inside of the slide where the barrel hood rides against the slide and wipe the barrel lug at the bottom of the barrel. Apply one drop to each of the slide rail grooves (once the slide is moved on the receiver, the oil will be distributed to each of the slide rails). The most important drop of oil is placed where the trigger bar and connector meet. Failure to properly lubricate the junction of the trigger bar and connector can lead to premature wear and a very heavy trigger pull.
Do not over-lubricate your Glock. Glock pistols are designed to operate properly with only small amounts of lubrication. Over-lubrication can cause the gun to collect large amounts of burnt and unburnt powder, brass shavings, dirt, lint and other foreign matter that can affect the proper functioning of your gun.
WARNING
Do not put oil inside the firing pin channel, around the extractor, on the breech face, any where near the barrel chamber or feed ramp, nor in the magazine. These areas should be kept clean and free from lubricant. Lubricant in these areas can cause contamination to primers and result in a failure to fire.
Dry Firing
Glock pistols can be dry fired without damage to the pistol. Do not pull back the lug of the firing pin and let it snap forward when the slide is removed from the receiver. Damage to the firing pin and firing pin safety can occur.

Don't use chlorinated brake cleaner, use NON-Chlorinated.Yes, I forgot to point that out too. NON-chlorinated brake cleaner is the same as Gun Scrubber. Thanks for catching that. :)

q-tips and pipe cleaners work wonders too, if you dont have access to an air hose thingy (technical term).
while you glock will work even with your knuckle hairs :o all up in it, that just sounds kinda nasty :D
