I thought I would do a servey since I just figured them out.
What is your Handgun caliber of choice?

Do you get much of a choice with your Department?
Do you think it matters much at all?

Maybe this belongs in "Coffee break", But I thougth I would through it out there.

All in all, one that gets the job done. There have been more civilains and COPS killed with small caliber bullets than larger ones. Small ones may not have the knock down power like a 45 cal. Yet, they can deliver a leathal blow.

Personally, I'll take my Illudium Pew 36 explosive space modulator.

Seriously though in rifles I like .308 for general purpose stuff or 5.56 for 100 yards or so in. For handguns I like the .45 ACP. Lately I have even developed this real bad high end custom 1911 jonesing that is really expensive to cure.

A very effective/lethal one. The Afghans nicknamed it the Poisoned Sting. Jeeze, I love my AK-74.

If I knew that I was going to be in a gun fight, I would take a long gun over any handgun. If you were forcing me to choose a pistol, it would be a .45 caliber in anything except S&W.

Give me a .40 s&w any day of the week.

Looks like .40 S&W by a two-to-one margin. It just does so many things well with a minimun of compromise; it gets my vote.

They haven't yet made a caliber to satisfy my need, my need for spee...wait that doesn't make sense...I meant to say Speak softly and carry a big...that's not right either..Ah, here it is "Shoot first, shoot again, shoot one more time for good luck, then ask questions" :D

Dept issue is Federal 180 grain in .40 cal
so I carry off duty with the same ammo.

My overall choice would be a 9mm. I enjoy shooting the 9mm, and I also seem to be more confident and shoot more consistent with it. Favorite round: Winchester 147grain.

Glock 31, .357sig, we are not given a choice in duty weapons. Off-duty is my trusty Walther PPK.

Seriously though, PPKs are sweet little pistols.

I know, Iknow a lot of people don't like the little 9mm kurz (sounds better than 380) but I just like that pistol. easy to carry and makes a lot of noise if necessary. we are issued a Glock 33 also in the 357sig, but I'd just as soon carry my PPK. I do a pretty fair British accent by the way, lol.

You need to try the Walther P99. Now that is a sweet handgun.

I am issued 9mm, but if I had my choice, I would carry an 88 Magnum. It shoots through schools. :D

Pistol? .44 Automag (only shot through an AMT)

Rifle? .375 Remington Ultra Mag. Fast and flat! Able to shoot silver dollars at 1000 meters, tears the heart out of a deer.

.375 RUM  The deer in Maine must be a wee bit larger than the deer in GA. I don't think you'd have to bother gutting a GA deer if you shot it with a .375 - no innards left.

I don't know about GA, but last season I shot a 10 Pointer at 229 lbs. Put the round right behind the shoulder at about 270 meters and it literally took a toilet paper tube sized chunk of the heart out. The great part is, using the Nosler balistic tips, the exit wound was only slightly larger than the entry wound. Man I love that round

9mm Taurus. Its not the size of the round, its where you put it. :D

i am a big fan of the 357 sig. except for the fact that it produces a muzzle flash roughly the size and shape of a medium pumpkin. i like the bottle-necked rounds in general, due to their reduced chance of a failure to feed type malfunction (hanging up on the feed ramp). i realize that this doesnt happen much, but i worked for a .40 S&W dept where we were issued somewhat cheap ammo and many of us experienced repeated fail to feed malfunctions (feed ramp hangups) pistol was sig p229. i guess i just have bad taste in my mouth because of that. i better get over it though as the .40 S&W sig p229/p226 is the weapon i will be carrying again in the not too distant future. i hope they dont issue that crappy ammo...

but as listed above, the caliber is less important than shot placement. lots of people bash 9mm, but i never felt undergunned carrying a 9mm. and i know enough coppers who have had to use their 9mm with good results (they are still alive despite the badguys' best efforts to the contrary).

Nice sized deer. Good shot too.

I haven't killed that many deer, but the biggest deer I've killed was a 10pt (more dumb luck than skill). And although I didn't weigh it I could lift it (barely) by myself, so it had to be under 200lb. Probably 175 before field dressing. Hit it from about 40 yards with a .3006 using 150 grain and even then his heart was mush.

But then, that probably explains a lot; in the GA trees and brush, few people ever shoot a deer from more than 200 or even 150 yards. At least the ones that are being honest :p

BTW - sorry to hijack the thread, I know this isn't a hunting forum :)
