A Message From Assistant Secretary Michael Garcia - Death of Federal Air
Marshal George Gibson

The ICE family is deeply saddened by the death of Federal Air Marshal George
Gibson, 31, who died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Sunday
afternoon, March 13, at Southern Methodist Hospital in Clinton, Md.

FAM Gibson joined ICE and the Federal Air Marshal Service on February 3,
2002 and his performance was consistently outstanding. He was well respected
by his peers and supervisors and routinely accomplished his mission in a
positive and professional manner.

FAM Gibson earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Charleston
Southern University in 1996. From October 1996 until February 2000, Gibson
served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Sumter County, South Carolina Sheriff's
Department. From February 2000 until February 2003, he served as an officer
with the United States Capital Police.

FAM Gibson is survived by his wife, Joanna, and two young daughters. He
will be missed, and all of us at ICE extend our deepest condolences to FAM
Gibson's family and friends.

Its sad that his heart problems weren't noticed before to prevent such a tragedy. My thoughts go out to his family. They truely lost a quality ICE member and family member. Gawd Bless.

Let me preface this with, I did not personally know Fam Gibson. I just want to clear up, what I know some have probably thought, since he died of a heart attack. My understanding, from talking to Fams who knew Fam Gibson, is he was in great shape. Everyone says he worked out regularly and ate well. I know the first assumption is to think he was out of shape and lethargic, but this wasn't the case.

I just wanted to clear that up, if there were any questions.

Rest in peace George. :(

Unfortunately genetics plays such a large role. There is a older co-worker of mine that's been in incredible shape and runs triathlons on a regular basis. We were all shocked when he suffered a heart attack and had 2 stents put in several months ago. Man he could run me into the ground.

My prayers to this agent's co-workers, friends & family... Rest In Peace.
