i'm curious to know exactly how a background investigator obtains military records. does he just send a request to the national personnel records center? what about the national guard? does he run a check in all the states the applicant resided in? is their some database that lists all persons who've served in the military that the BI has access to?

You will have to sign a release authorizing the BI to access them

Provided the applicant has signed a release of information authorization, the BI could apply in writing to the personnel records center in St Louis for a records check. It's time consuming and can take forever. Most often, local checks are conducted in the areas surrounding the base of assignment. There are ways however to get the information you're looking for, IF you know who to contact!

Have a great day!

so is it S.O.P. for a BI to request a check for military records (including national guard records), even if the applicant didn't list ever being in the military???

I am curious. In the 5 yrs active duty that I served, outside of boot & school, I was only with one Unit. This should make tracking my military b/g easier. My question is, when a dept does a military b/g .... what records are they wanting ? I was told that it takes longer to do a b/g on a military applicant than the normal citizen. If I can obtain these records in advance, will this speed up the process for my b/g investigator ? which records should I request ? any help would be great. Thanx !

Toad,

I was on active duty when I went through one of my BI. All that the department wanted from me was the local number of the CID office, so that they could check if I had ever been court martialed, been investigated for anything, of had any Art.15's. I had ended up having the CID agent contact me after my BI did and try to recruit me into CID and stay in the Army. He told me that that was the extent of what the department wanted from him and then wished me luck. That could have been just a one time thing where it didn't require alot of time to get anything from the military. Usually they can tell from your DD-214 if they have to dig any deeper, just by your RE codes and such. Many times they can contact the local recruiter and find out what those mean and may not have to request any records on you.

Thanx Tank !!!!!! I know my RE code is RE-R1 ... which basically means that I was honorably discharged & recommended for re-enlistment if I want. I am pretty familial w/ all the boxes & their meanings on the DD 214... I just thought that thing just told all !!! Except for medical records. Anyhow, thanks again. i HOPE IT IS THAT SIMPLE !

What do background investigators look for in a file 201?

Requesting records can be a long process to go through for the B/Investigator. I may be a little off base but to make the records request the B/I has to have a certain document that you must sign and give information about. Namely branch, time, reserve/active, and etc. For National Guard/Reserve they only have to call the unit and request the information, this is with the applicants approval. About the 201 file I am not really sure. I think that information will be submitted with the offical records request. Like I said I may be a little off but this is the basic track, hope I could help. Take care and be safe.
