Anybody know if the Oct written test will be enough time to make the alleged February class?

HEY TOPSPIN HOW ARE YOU? AS FAR AS YOUR QUESTION GOES IT REALLY DEPENDS ON YOU AND YOUR BACKGROUND. IF YOU HAVE A CLEAN BACKGROUND WHERE YOUR BI DOES NOT HAVE TO DIG THAT MUCH THAN HOPEFULLY YOU CAN MAKE IT INTO THE SO CALLED FEBRUAURY CLASS. WHEN I SAY SO CALLED I MEAN IT FOR THE NYPD THEY SAY ONE THING AND THEN DO ANOTHER BUT I STILL THINK ITS A GREAT DEPARTMENT. BACK TO YOUR QUESTION AND IF YOU HAVE A BACKGORUND THAT HAS BEEN TROUBLESOME IN THE PAST IT COULD TAKE A WHILE AND MAYBE LONG ENOUGH SO YOU CANT MAKE THE FEBRUARY CLASS OR EVEN IF THEY DISQUALIFY YOU BUT THE WAY THAT THEY NEED PEOPLE YOU PROBABLY WOULD HAVE HAD TO MURDER SOME ONE. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION I COULD BE WRONG. HOPE THIS HELPED SOME.

Thanks for the information. When you say "murder someone", do you mean simply murder them or having been CONVICTED of murdering them? Big difference!
Actually, I am not worried at all about my background, I was recently checked by the State Police and made it through no problem, so I feel confident about that. I just hope I can score high enough and get a fast investigator to push me into the next class, whenever that might be.

They have been accepting cadidates into the academy without even having their BG done these days! There are guys that go through the academy, graduate and then get canned after they get on the job because the BI uncovered something. It's a joke and a good indication of what kind of condition the dept is in.

I think if they get the test results and pre-screenings started earlier than usual (now it is approx. 3 months after the test), you should be fine for February.

You will need to pass the pre-screening, psych and PT and, with an early start, you will be well into your BI (or done with it) by February. Of course, you can't count on things going smoothly with the NYPD-APD.

If you make it, it is not unusual at all to get the call within days or even hours of the swearing-in (which could really leave you burning a major bridge with your current employer).

Be sure you have all the paperwork you need and your ducks in a row in advance. If not, you will inadvertantly cause delays in the hiring process.

Good Luck.

Good advice. Relevant paperwork would include... selective service, any driving violations, immunizations etc?

You need the following:

Selective service #

Military discharge records (I think it is called a DD214 - I've never been in the military do I am unsure)

All official education transcripts (including H.S.)

Official Soc Sec work records for past ten years or since H.S. (whichever is further back).

Official court dispositions for all offences and violations (including moving violations). Official dispositions or paperwork of a civil nature (divorce, law suit, etc.)

You must disclose any health issues and give access to your health records (you do not need to provide them though).

Official 5-year driving abstract.

Get all of these now and the process should go smoothly. Armed with copies of this information at every stage in the process will ensure that will fill in the application materials thouroughly and consistently throughout the process (you will have to provide the same information over and over again for every step of the process and, without the paperwork in front of you, you WILL screw it up).

Best of luck!

Dano made a very interesting valid point:

"They have been accepting candidates into the academy without even having their BG done these days! There are guys that go through the academy, graduate and then get canned after they get on the job because the BI uncovered something. It's a joke and a good indication of what kind of condition the dept is in."

There was a guy in my boyfriend's command that this happened to. He did not disclose information, however, during the BI, something was discovered and he was fired. Apparently, a company this guy worked for previously had him on tape doing something illegal.

What a waste of taxpayer money and time to send this guy through the academy!

Yep!

This is one man’s opinion and I do not want it to dissuade others from perusing a career with the NYPD process but I want future candidates to get an appreciation for what to expect when the process begins – there is nothing objective about the following appraisal so take it for what it is worth:

I bailed out of the process with three weeks away of the July class start date. I withdrew b/c of the low pay and morale problems. Also, I unexpectedly closed on a house in Jersey in late May. A great deal came through at the last minute and I couldn’t resist. Considering my new home and the department’s problems together, the job ceased to be worth relocating for.

Another big consideration that put me over the top, though, was the gross inefficiency and incompetence I encountered during the hiring process. I was appalled by it. Their processing procedures are so outdated it is laughable. The people at APD were totally indifferent and disengaged in their work (including the shrinks), and the environment is so demoralized you can almost taste it. At first I thought it was part of the game and they were purposely trying to intimidate candidates and weed out the feint-hearted. I realized quickly that this mess wasn’t by design…the system is just dysfunctional and the people are miserable!!!

But, if this is how they handle a relatively puny pool of candidates (maybe 5 thousand at best), I can only imagine what a circus the process was in the days that 50,000 people took the test!!!

This is a candidate’s first look at the NYPD…It isn’t pretty so be PATIENT and well prepared for it.

Dano hit it on the head with the process I to went through the same thing. Your only recourse would be to have a "HOOK" or pray that you end up with a person at the APD that is willing to do there job. I was lucky enough to have someone that was great and when you get the call PM me and I will give you the name. Be sure to follow Dano advice on what to get as far as paperwork goes that alone will make your life alot smoother ( check his post and make sure you have ALL those items if not start working on getting them if your not sure about any of them POST,POST, POST on the board)

Good luck.

Assuming there is a October class. When would the people who took the June test here a response? Wouldn't it be right around the corner? I would assume it's before the October test. But I haven't even gotten my results yet. Should it take this long for a response? Any info would be great, as I do not know what to think!!!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to share your ideas.
I think I am in great shape. I have no driving violations. I have all my selective service info. I don't think I've heard of a "driving abstract" but I'll go out on a limb and assume it's from the DMV. Also, what's the soc sec work records? Thanks

Topspin:

snpusmc knows what he is talking about. We went through the process together and actually helped keep eachother sane. Something that would have been impossible without this forum (kudos again to its creators).

With this info, you get a headstart that we only wish we had! Of course, the people at APD should be telling candidates about all this but they seam content to let you play blind man's bluff through a minefield!

Take our advice and the process will be much easier and chances of success will increase greatly.

Anyway:

Driving Abstracts are at the DMV.

Social Security Records can be obtained at the local Social Security office ($35). Check their site for contact info and locations:

http://www.ssa.gov/

Don't forget that all these documents need to be official for the BI (have a raised seal) or they are worthless!!!

More tips:

Make many copies of this paperwork and make several stapled booklets out of them. That way, you can submit the official documents to the BI and have an organized sets of copies to reference during the pre-screening, psych, etc. to fill out the paperwork properly and consistently.

Make a copy of every piece of paper before submitting it (whenever possible) and keep it in your records for future reference.

Save and file any correspondence b/t yourself and the dept.

Your essentially expected to do your own BI. The more thorough you are, the quicker the process will go!

Best of luck.

Dano... 1 question... after I locate and request these things (ssa info and DMV records) do I keep them on my person and carry them or do I need the agencies to send them like I would an official school transcript? Also, if I do keep them won't I be compromising their integrity if I open them to make a copy?

Everything but transcripts can be submitted by you (although I am unsure about military documents). The APD doesn't have the funds to do their job properly so you all but end up doing your own BI. Actually, it is good in a way because you learn a lot about yourself and the system along the way.

Just make sure the documents are official and have a raised seal. It is the seal that authenticates the document.

It requires legwork but it is no big deal when you have all the time in the world to get it. The Courts, DMV, SSA, etc. all keep regular business hours. If you work full time during the day like me, the last thing you want is to have to track down and obtain this information within 10 days (that’s what most of us had to do).

Now get cracking!!! Good Luck!
